I randomly heard Cat’s in the Cradle (original version) the other day, and it got stuck in my head (as it almost always does, every time). It got me thinking about what other songs exist about the relationship between a parent and child (from either POV).

I came up with 3 good ones right away…

Cat‘s in the Cradle (Harry Chapin)
Parents Just Don’t Understand (Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff)
Just the Two of Us (Will Smith)

The inclusion of two Will Smith songs, each from the opposite POV, still makes me chuckle, 20+ years after the release of his parental POV version.

What other songs are there with this theme? Positive or negative, inspiring or depressing.

Institution (Suicidal Tendencies) kinda fits, but that is a stretch.

The Circle Game written by Joni Mitchell has always been one of my favorites, but it's really more of a memory of a younger one's childhood seen from the viewpoint of a parent.

Cocain (Eric Clapton) has a horrible father/son related story attached, but the song itself is not about the relationship.

Papa Don't Preach.. Madonna
Good one. But was it actually about her relationship with her father, or just a general “Girls just want to have fun” theme?

It's about a girl with an unwanted pregnancy (that she ultimately wants to keep) telling her father about it.

I don’t know if I ever actually paid attention to the words. LOL

First album I ever purchased. His/they're performance of it in concert was always a highlight. It isn't really about a parent-child relationship though.
I don't disagree on the whole. But I feel the line "Even the ones I stole" is poignant. Some people with shitty childhoods could probably relate.

Then there's this one, my favorite song of his. Alice was so wasted for the recording even he might not know what it's about.
