lol

yeah, its why he went under the knife in 2007. they used him way too much in 04. from 2000-2004, he was a top closer in the game...2.49 ERA, .961 WHIP, nearly a K/IP.

his final 3 years in the bigs? 4.84 1.354

I think my sarcasm didn't come through. I'm well aware of what Foulke did for the Sox (I was a pretty diehard Red Sox fan at that time). HE was fucking off the chain in the '04 ALCS, and as I understand it, he was pretty well aware that it was going to cost him the rest of his career. I've got a lot of respect for that.

He also signed a one year I-think-$5M deal with the Indians, and prior to spring training, he called them up and told them he wasn't going to be able to pitch the way they needed him to and retired. He could have shown up, hit the DL and collected his money, but he didn't. I have a lot of respect for that too.

I've found myself defending him against Sox fans plenty over the years, which drives me crazy.

sincerely,

Keith Foulke's Grandma

never heard one person on the radio, TV, in person or via smoke signal speak ill of foulke.

not

one

youd be just as hard pressed to find someone who hated pedro here.

Wait for Rex Racer's next post on this thread. Particularly after we've laid some praise on Foulke.

Foulke's smear campaign was that whole "Johnny from Burger King" bullshit.

Yeah, he's doing some good things here. I'm happy as hell to have him.

I like that you acknowledge the Red Sox' smear campaigns. I also like that you respect Foulke (believe me, a lot of Red Sox fans don't). Could I have found a unbiased Red Sox fan? Hot damn! I'm buying a lottery ticket today, my man.

You just don't know who you are talking to. :noidea:

Papelbon will have a hard time catching or closing in on Rivera.

Rivera pitched so long because he relied on one high 80s pitch. He was also routinely given one of the most generous strike zones of any major league pitcher.

Papelbon doesn't have either thing going for him.

In all fairness, Rivera's numbers are skewed because of his time as a starter (where he pitched poorly).

And Rivera aged extremely well from 2005 on, something very rare for a closer:
Rivera from 2005 on - 1.91 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 5.90 K/BB, .206 BAA, 91% save percentage

50 Innings as a starter. Didn't sku that much. What skued things more his how ridiculously good Papelbon started his career.

Agreed with the aging part, though.

Can't blame a guy for trying I guess. But let's stop the madness after Mo goes in. There are already too many relievers in the HOF... I mean, Bruce Sutter ? Seriously ? ... and enough with the saves stats.

1% of all people to have played in the MLB make the HoF. I admit there are some that made that were undeserving, but it is not watered down.

As far as saves, I agree with y'all that it is an overrated stat.

When he's on he is a great closer... However, he needs to CTFD!!! Jesus Paps! and yes, say bye bye to him for the year.

Such an asshole. Papelbon's ratio of talent to pain-in-the-ass is worse than Puig.
