Congrats to Kaepernick and his shiny new +$100M deal with the Niners. Surely, this had to be done, 49ers can't lose Kaep. Unfortunately, this likely means sayonara to some other core 49ers in the near future because of the contract. Since the precedent was set that this is a QB league, they have been handed out millions on millions worth of contracts (Flacco, Cutler, etc., are you serious?) and you can see how teams are getting destroyed because of it (Ravens). I just hope the 49ers don't fall down this path and screw themselves for a long time.

But this reminded me of why I love baseball so much. You can keep a winning core together, if your team ponies up the money. Not all teams are equal, but I believe most teams, if not all, are turning in a profit? I love that the Giants are able to keep the core of 2 championship squads together and continue to build towards (hopefully) many more.

Anyway, this just came to me in the wake of Kaep's new deal.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."

No time clock and each team has 27 outs each to do something. The greatest game ever invented.

I like how baseball has games every day, so every day something happens worth following/watching/discussing. Football you gotta wait.

Also, football games are so boring, very little live action, mostly huddles and timeouts and changes of possession and commercials.

So you definitely don't like salary caps...that's one thing most think baseball needs to tame the Dodgers/Red Sox/Yankees craziness.

I used to think so too, but things are changing with regards to ownership. The new breed of owners have SO MUCH money they don't mind overpaying for teams and players, because they can (what else can a billionaire do to one up his peers?) and because they know they will eventually sell for a profit no matter how much they spend. So now I'm convinced teams will either keep up or sell to someone who will, the game is changing.

Look at Oakland, Miami, St Louis...

These are all smaller markets that consistently field competitive teams.

It can be done (even if they do have a disadvantage).

Further, look at Chicago (Cubs), Mets, Boston (until the last 10 years), Angels (until the last 10 years)... The advantage does not automatically equate to success.

It's because of the Flacco, Cutler and Romo contracts that the Niners had to make this sort of deal. The market for QBs has skyrocketed.

Anyways, the NFL salary is projected to go from $133 mil in 2014 to $150 mil by 2016. Niners have Paraag Marathe, the best capologist in the business. They will be able to keep the core intact. I believe Kap took a smaller signing bonus in order to help out with this. Plus it was always better to set the market for young QBs because Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck and Cam Newton will be getting new deals soon.
