Someone gave a me a book a few years ago, it was written by a journalist who traveled the world. Basically it was a "the most" book with oddities. The most dangerous places on Earth, the most polluted, the most remote, etc. It was good, interesting. There was also a list of the most disgusting public bathrooms he had ever been in. He mentioned bathrooms from all over the world, some in super crowded third world counties. He said the worst bathroom in the world he had ever been in was one in Portland Maine, he said it was not close.

He also described where exactly it was and about a year later I was in Portland....that was not a sight I wanted to see, so I didnt.

Missed opportunity. Incurious American.

Back in the early 80's, I was on a European trip with my parents (high school graduation present) and we were in southern England at Ilfracombe Beach in north Devon. My dad and I went into this bathroom and not five seconds later, my dad went running out. I finished my business so to speak and saw my Dad gasping for air and said to my dad, "Are you okay?"

My dad just said, "Yeah, but that smell in that bathroom is terrible, how did you manage to stay in there that long?"
I replied, "I really had to pee"

Worst bathroom was in China where you had to squat and aim your dump into a slit on the floor.
There were no walls, so the next guy would be doing the same thing three feet away.
