I dont know... Politics and the legal system over here (U.S. in general) are a comedy show since the 2008 election. Luckily your not attached to the main land.

first they get shunned by the feds for making it illegal to be an illegal immigrant (i know, its not nice to ask, but how else you gonna find out?)

then the feds declare an arizona state park off limits to US citizens because of its a drug trafficing route from mexico.

now this?

Actually the more I read about it the more it seems like the court made a correct decision. The National Voter Registration act ensures that all states have the same requirements to register to vote. The Arizona law conflicted with that.

The court did agree that their requirement requiring voters to provide proof of identification in order to vote on election day.

It was beyond asking. If you didn't have proof of immigration it was a crime and they could detain you. That law would affect tons of American citizens too. It was an open invitation to be harassed. Its little different from policemen pulling over black drivers in a white neighborhood just to check them out.

In todays world we certainly need to document who is in this country and the immigration problem is a huge one, but I think that was a bad law that infringed the rights of US citizens and legal residents of the US.

My ancestors didn't come all the way from another Country just so we would have to put up with immigrants today.

I wonder if any Native Americans would be pulled over under suspicion of being an illegal Mexican immigrant. Captain, set irony meter for ten!

After seeing your avatar I am going to need to see some proof of legal residence.

I must say I think it is ridiculous that you can register to vote with just a utility bill and no ID However you need an ID at the poll places. Just do it right from the get go, ID at all times, wtf!? What is the point in allowing people to register with a piece of mail, but then needing an ID to vote? I could go register as Takashaniqua Matfasuzukiquazimoto as long as I have a utility bill with that name on it.

I believe registered voters decide how many electoral seats a state has... it's a dirty political trick that has an agenda.

EDIT: I may be completely wrong, then I also don't get it.

i'm not saying its not flawed.

however like you said yourself, everyone has to carry proof, then it is as equal as it can be.

there never will be a perfect way, and the one they devised is quite obvious of this.

however, it kinda goes along with the voting law that was just revoked. it was sent down because if you are able to provide an ID, then in principle you must be a US citizen.. obviously there are fakes and not everyone is going to get caught, but if you've got substantial proof, as EVERYONE is required to have, whats to be upset about.

Here's the problem with it. First, they are not going to check people equally, are they? So what happens if you're a completely legal mexican american, but don't have any proof of citizenship? The chances of you being falsely detained are much higher than the chances of a white american.

If they truly conducted random checks, stratified by race, and arrested everyone who didn't have proper ID, it might be fine, but I'm guessing that's not how it works.

I just don't think its right you can be pulled over or asked for ID or proof of citizenship at any time just because of the way you look so therefore I think its a bad law. It was probably a bunch of people in little danger of ever being inconvenienced by this law that were in favor of it.

I must say I think it is ridiculous that you can register to vote with just a utility bill and no ID However you need an ID at the poll places. I think you can register by mail in many states so I don't even know how the Arizona law would be enforced. According to National Voter Registration Act guidelines a form is filled out with sworn signature under threat of perjury and can be done either in person or by mail. I don't know what research or checking the election board does to each application if any at all.

Either way the Arizona law violated the national law so that's why it was overturned.
