The US beat Finland 4-2 to win the gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Also on this day in 1937, Lou Gehrig did a screen test for the role of Tarzan, but Johnny Weissmuller eventually got the part.

that 2002 one was an absolutely epic day.

watched the game at the old legion downtown (yay for cheap beer!). won the Olympic hockey pool on Joe Sakic's assist on the final goal. Spent said pool winnings on more beer.
wandered down to Robson Street. An impromptu road hockey game had broken out by the art gallery, and the cops did the only logical thing..... stopped traffic so as not to interrupt the game.
It took several hours to make down to the end of Robson.... Ended up in a bar, got the last several pitchers before service was cut off, and just enjoyed the day. When the beer was finished, the party on the street was still in full swing.

I watched the game (every game in 2002) at the Sunset Bar and Grill in Kits. We ended up partying with these people from Montreal and went to a house party then I had to go play hockey that night. just smashed. we walked all through kits before, around down town as well. it was so great. nice to do it again 8 years later but actually be at the game.

I'll never forget this goal:

It doesn't look as great on replay, but sure was something special when you saw it live. I'd seen that type of dummy in soccer, but never before (or since) in hockey. Completely froze Richter, tied the game up, and we never looked back.

Look at that team:

Mario Lemieux-C
Paul Kariya
Ed Jovanovski
Curtis Joseph
Jarome Iginla
Simon Gagné
Chris Pronger
Mike Peca
Owen Nolan
Joe Nieuwendyk
Scott Niedermayer
Adam Foote
Theo Fleury
Martin Brodeur
Eric Brewer
Rob Blake
Ed Belfour
Steve Yzerman-A
Ryan Smyth
Brendan Shanahan
Joe Sakic-A
Al MacInnis
Eric Lindros

Amazing.

I can't remember if USA women's hockey has ever secured a gold. Gimme a little bit to drive over to the U.S. Olympic Medal Repository and check all 2,549 medals to see.

ZING! ;)

Meh - We have most golds in one Olympics and on Home Soil.

ZingBack!

but we cant ever compare the amount of medals the US has. over 300 million to over 30 Million for population.

I know, I remember us winning. Was just razzing you guys. Canada and Australia are actually two countries that I think have an impressive Olympic record given their population. Cheers.

What about Norway? They have a population under 5 million and have a total of 447 Olympic Medals compared to 405 for Canada and 441 for Australia.

Them Norwegians sure can ski.

I wish our Summer games were as well represented as our Winter. I know you were just jiving me (yes I used Jiving, I watched a old episode of Star Trek TOS that had Space Hippies).

I believe (there is that term again) that our Summer Games in London will be one of our better showings but we could never compete with the US in that one.
