One point for each field seems incredibly generous. I would all but guarantee that a student knowing nothing but the existence and general purpose of the awards could guess 5 answers and get at least 2 of them right, don't you think?

You have great faith in kids. There were maybe two that got 3 categories. A handful of others got one. My second question was to name a Hitchcock movie, two got that one. And some of the guesses were sad.

Did they all write 5 guesses at least?

It kind of blows my mind that they couldn't guess better than that. When I was super young (like when girls still had cooties type young) I think I thought that they were just for science, didn't realize that the Peace Prize was "real" and didn't know who Alfred Nobel actually was, but I still would have guessed Chemistry and Physics. I probably would have finished the trio with Biology and then guessed Math and god knows what else, and that still would have been good enough for two.

Which one was answered by the most people? I'm guessing it was either Chemistry or Peace, probably Peace.

Most were too vague. Just said science, math, etc.

As in, just any Hitchcock movie? Just one?

And they couldn't get that right?

Let's not be too hard on the kids, I haven't read a single Harry Potter book or seen any of the movies. J.K. Rowling is the author of the series and Daniel Ratcliffe is the lead actor. That's all I know.

There's a big difference between not having seen or read vs. being completely unaware of.

And you were even at least alive for those things. Although without medical testing I'm not sure that anyone would have known.

They may be aware of him and what he did for a living but just don't know a specific title. As a comparison, I'm definitely far from certain that a high percentage of my peers could have named a Fritz Lang movie title when I was in college 15-20 years ago.

*raises hand to ask question* - Any relation to Robert Lang and would I have run into him at the Olde Country Buffet?

I'm not sure Fritz Lang is a fair comparison. His filmography - especially his English filmography - is significantly smaller than Hitchcock's and he doesn't have as many huge hits as Hitchcock had.

I'm not a cinema buff, but really all I can think of for Lang are M and Metropolis, whereas Hitchcock has Psycho, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Dial M For Murder, Strangers On A Train, and Rear Window, as a few that come to mind.

OK, Charlie Chaplin then? Or maybe the Marx Brothers?

The point was simply that both Lang and Hitchcock stopped making movies long before the respective college kids were even born. I mean, look at the dates of the movies you mentioned. Metropolis came out in 1927, M in 1931. Whereas the Hitchcock movies are dated 1960, 1959, 1958, 1954, 1951 and 1954. You don't think that makes a difference? My parents were alive when Hitchcock movies were released. They weren't when Metropolis and M were released, and there would have been almost no way for them to watch them many years after they were in theaters.

You definitely make some fair points, but it seems (to me at least) like the bolded would actually support my position that they should be more familiar now than in the past.

I can't say I've spent much time looking for Hitchcock movies on Amazon or Netflix, but with the availability of streaming movies and DVD/Blu Ray, it would seem like there's less excuse for not knowing about these people today than in the past.

Random Hitchcock moment this week:

So, TeenNick has started a new thing called "The Splat" where they play cartoons/shows from the 90's (as a kid who grew up then, it's awesome), and there was an episode of Rocko's Modern life on (weird ass show). So, I watched and it's about him watching his neighbors window and thinking the wife killed the husband. At the end they played the Hitchcock Presents theme song and it hit me what I had just watched. I felt pretty smart.
