Japanese tsunami survivor rescued from roof of home that floated out to sea - Yahoo! News

TOKYO - Hiromitsu Shinkawa was pushed out to sea while he clung to the roof of his home after a tsunami swept away his wife. For two days, he drifted off Japan's northeastern coast, trying to get the attention of helicopters and ships that passed by — to no avail.

Finally, on Sunday, a Japanese military vessel spotted the 60-year-old waving a red cloth. He was about 15 kilometres (about 10 miles) offshore from the earthquake-ravaged city of Minamisoma, said Yoshiyuki Kotake, a Defence Ministry spokesman.

Shinkawa told his rescuers that the tsunami hit as he and his wife returned home to gather some belongings after Friday's quake. His wife was swept away, Kotake said.

"Several helicopters and ships passed by, but none of them noticed me," he was quoted by another defence agency spokesman, who refused to be identified by name, as saying.

Japanese troops used a small boat to pluck him from the ocean.
Military officials said Shinkawa was lucky that mild weather and relatively calm seas enabled him to stay afloat for nearly two days, the Kyodo news agency reported.

"I thought today was the last day of my life," it quoted him as saying.

if you can please donate to the red cross.

How did you make out nate any damage

there was quite a bit of damage, minor in comparison to the damage in Japan. No loss of life or injuries. We have a pretty good warning and evacuation system in place here. Residents had several hours to move away from tsunami zones to higher ground/red cross shelters.

Amazing....I always tell my kids...no matter how bad your day was...everytime you sit around and feel bad for yourself ....there's always somebody out there that has it worse than you....can you imagine watching your wife and/or kids being swept off to their death and there's not a thing you can do about it? Gives me nightmares just to think about it...

I don't think it's possible to know just how much Japan has changed forever due to this quake.

wonder how many of those were even alive 70 years ago. I dont see any in their pics. so either they are being taught not to forgive and hate for their lifetime (I bet they own a ton of sony or other japanese products) or they just watched Pearl Harbour and figured it was great to get on that bus......

this indicates otherwise. :der:

Ignorant douchebags are everywhere, but I am also suprised that people would post this crap on facebook. All I can say is wow....
