Well he's only what 31? He probably has at least 5-6 great years left in him. Look at A Rod's contract. At least Albert will probably earn his..But salaries are def getting pretty outlandish...

I think he's 32. I say he has about 3 good years left in him.

Remember 17 years ago when the World Series was cancelled because owners thought salaries were getting out of control..... LOL. Nice work. Pujols is 31 ( at a minimum, as a Dominican player he may be 35-36) so that means his contract goes til he is 41 ( or more)???? LOL at the Angels.

Well if they can get a title within a 4 year time frame it's a great deal, it will pay for itself in revenue, after that anything else is a bonus..

Good for the reds though?

It's been too long since I've actually watched a baseball game.

To think the Reds used to be my entire life as a boy.

I continue to watch the Reds for some stupid reason.

Albert just got 250 mil guaranteed. Matt Forte is begging to get 20 mil guaranteed...and he probably won't get it.

That's fucked up.

This is a blessing for the Cards. They would benefit for the first 3 or 4 years, but he would be a strain on the payroll after that. I can't believe the angels gave a 31 year old that much after 3 straight years of declining numbers.

Lunacy. That being said I'm glad that he's not in the NLC anymore. How long till he tests positive for steroids? Defintiely fits the profile and was pretty fishy how quickly he came back from that injury last year. Agree with the other poster that with the Latin players their true age is anyone's best guess.

This is why baseball and basketball suck. Ridiculous contracts and guaranteed money. In football you have to earn your check.

Pujols is the best player ever. Ever. He took 2 rings to STL, and now he moved on. It is his decision and he has won more meaningful games in STL in the last 10 years than the Reds have collectively managed to win in the last 35 years.

Get paid, move to Cali. Be the man for another 6 years.

Don't think anyone is upset about where he went...it's the fact that the money is getting out of hand. Owners complain about lack of funds and then turn around and spend this kind of jack on a player.

Players can cry for collusion and either way the owners are screwed. As much as they've fixed in sports over the past 10-20 years, this is something that has not been properly addressed.

Players talk about how they need millions and millions because they only work for a few years, but the reality is...1 or 2 million would be more than enough for many middle class americans to be set for 20-30 years. The players want to work for 5 years and be paid like millionaires for the next 30 years (or receive enough money to live like it).

Look at the NBA. Owners giving contracts to guys like candy...then complain about 300million in losses. really? how about not spending 9 million on Chris Kaman or Dudley, or whoever.

I've tried to get interested in the NBA several times... aside from watching part of one championship that involved Michael Jordan, I just couldn't get worked up about it. I'm not driving 2.5 hours to watch the pacers, nor 4.5 hours to watch the cavaliers.

Agreed. But, thats the way of the world in MLB!

Dont own a team if you dont want to spend. Or else youll be like the Reds and suck for 18 years

I just REALLY wish the 50 million they gave bruce was given to Votto for an extra 2/3 years. At least Votto earned it. Bruce is digusting

Votto is gone in 2 years. Prob will trade him in 2013 midseason

They went to Votto and offered him more years. He said no.

When a player doesn't want to be somewhere, there's not much you can do when that player thinks like Votto does. He wasn't interested in anything more than a 3 year deal. So, oh well. Reds did the best they could with that situation, and got cost control over him for those 3 years as opposed to the uncertainty of arbitration. It wasn't exactly a "win", but it wasn't a "loss" either, all things considered.

Agreed about the spending money, but eventually, SOMETHING has to break...there's no way that owners in any sport can continue to pay and pay and pay. Eventually, fans not coming to games, staying at home to watch them on TV, etc...is going to hit. Look at what happened to Hockey a few years ago. Salaries were so large that a ticket to a game was ranging in the 100's for crappy seats. NFL has that, but they also only have 8 true home games. Could you imagine paying $50-$80 to sit in the nose-bleeds at a Reds game?

I'd trade Votto for a top flight pitcher as soon as possible. Let Alonso take over at first.

What's really fucked up is the money they gave CJ Wilson to become the #3 starter in their rotation.....the guy has been useless in the postseason yet he deserves $76 mil for four years? Must be nice to be able to just toss money around like that.....Albert will at least earn his for 4-5 years......I don't think anyone should ever be given a guaranteed contract for ten years though....
