OT: Pirates-DBacks Deal

DARKSTONE! I NEED YOUR OPINION...this is actually a BIG deal.

Ryan Church (ANGEL CHOIR SINGS HALLELUJAH CHORUS!), Bobby Crosby (eh...by 'other' crosby), DJ Carrassco for Chris Synder and Minors prospect Pedro Ciriaco (SS)

This seems a bit much actually...that's a lot of trade chips in one trade...for a catcher (Dejan says we're keeping freaking Doumit to use behind the plate some and 1st). like...we don't even NEED snyder, so this makes not a lot of sense.

man...the buccos OWNED this deadline. traded 2 good relievers (but aging ones that wouldn't be here in the future anyway with Lopez and Dotel) for McDonald, Lambo (pot head...but amazing skills), Joe Martinez, and John Bowker. Neal Huntington with a WIN on the day.

Crosby is batting .224/.301/.295. Church is batting .182/.240/.312. This is a nice case of addition by subtraction. Carrasco has been solid-ish, but he isn't someone this team needs to hold on to. They need a catcher more than a middle reliever, and since catchers are greatly more valuable in trades than middle relievers, they weren't going to get a catcher as good at his job as Carrasco is at his.

Ciriaco is a fast, defensively skilled shortstop. For a farm system that still lacks in he middle-infield position, he's a nice addition. He's nothing to get your hopes up on, but he is nice to have as organizational depth.

Snyder is a nice addition to the major league roster. Granted, he sucks, but he can actually throw someone out. And the D'backs are paying $3 million of his remaining salary. He'll make a fine duo with Doumit until the Pirates can hopefully deal him in the winter. The Pirates can't trade Doumit now because he's on the DL. Snyder is a nice fit to help plug the gap till Sanchez is ready.

It's really just two teams swapping a bunch of mediocre players. The Dotel and Lopez trades are big for the team though.

I agree with most of this, but Snyder's probably just a little better than you give him credit for. His average is low, but he draws walks and has better power than Doumit, and he'll stay healthier than Doumit most likely. The White Sox also really want a bat and keep missing on them. Play to their desperation once Doumit is healthy and flip him for Edwin Jackson. Now that would be a steal.

Ciriaco is worse than Diaz. He's a no-impact guy. My guess would be that this was a trade of Church and Crosby for Ciriaco and Carasco for Snyder, most closely matching values.

But if Doumit can stay behind the plate, and we play him against lefties and Snyder against righties, we'd probably have an OPS of about .800 + from behind the plate, which would be a huge boost to our offense.

But I definitely agree that the Dotel and Lopez trades were very solid, with Dotel's being an absolute steal.
