Is it wrong that I've never been a big fan of his? I guess it's the bravado...which is his entire character.

Ali, 74, one of the world's most celebrated athletes, was hospitalized this week for a respiratory ailment. The family spokesman has said he was in fair condition, but speculation has swirled about his health.

Asked about Ali's condition, the source said: "It's extraordinarily grave. It's a matter of hours."

The source said he had spoken with Ali's wife, Lonnie. "It could be more than a couple of hours, but it's not going to be much more. Funeral arrangements are already being made."

I remember growing up as a kid and into my teenage years the heavyweight division of boxing was fantastic. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Spinks etc. Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo fought Ali twice, going the distance both teams but losing the decision on both occasions.

He certainly was full of himself. Perhaps the creator of modern trash talk. But as a man, he was so much more than that. Gotta admit, I shed a few tears this morning.

RIP.

From his hometown newspaper Muhammad Ali | The Courier-Journal

Nothing wrong with that, for as much as he did for boxing, it's all the charity and humanitarian work that he did outside the ring that are his true legacy.

I was shocked to learn his age. That guy has looked 80 for 20 years. Fucking brutal. He's truly in a better place.

Guy had as much balls as anybody on this planet. One of the few athletes I truly wish I was around to see in his prime, both for the athleticism and for his ability to give the proverbial finger to any and everybody that deserved it.

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like he's been gone for awhile. The trash talking legend was gone a long time ago so that somewhat lessens the blow. You could see the side effects of the head shots going all the way back to the 1980 Larry Holmes fight (watch the 30 for 30 on it, depressing and mesmerizing).

Completely overlooked, weird thing I remember reading, Ali met with the KKK and actually agreed with them in regards to segregation. Think about that for a moment. That could not take place in today's world. Lebron James could not come out and say, you know, the Aryan Brotherhood have some great ideas. Like him or hate him the guy was fascinating.

My dad did some boxing in his army day's, so way back when I was his remote control, we used to watch a lot of boxing. Those certainly were the golden days for boxing. One thing I remember (enjoyed) the most was watching Ali goof around and let say strategize against a dangerous opponent. Ali had a tell; when he was ready to pour-it on, he would crunch down on his mouth guard, make a circle with his lips and bang is gloves together. My dad would say "there he goes, watch this". When he was serious and ready, no one could stand toe to toe with him.

Another piece of my youth gone to the ages. :ohwell:

Rest in Peace champ, you will be missed.

"Joe Frazier is an Uncle Tom. He works for the enemy."

"Joe Frazier should give his face to the Wildlife Fund. He's so ugly, blind men go the other way. Ugly! Ugly! Ugly! He not only looks bad, you can smell him in another country! What will the people of Manila think? That black brothers are animals. Ignorant. Stupid. Ugly and smelly."

Joe Frazier was a man who grew up poor, helped Ali out when he was struggling. That was what Ali did to his friends. Great boxer - no doubt. Superb entertainer - undeniable. But I don't think he was much of a human being. It's one thing to trash talk your enemies, another thing to insult the core of their being. He didn't serve his country. He was a bad father and an even worse husband (and he had plenty of tries).

Some will idolize his accomplishments. To me they are overshadowed by his failings and his poor character.

I was lucky enough to be at a party in his honour about 10 years ago.
Frail, was brought in by his handlers, but still commanded the room at a glance.
Amazing presence even then.

Can't imagine the energy at the top of his game.

Couldn't decide between this thread and the Fucking Nuts thread, but I'll go with it anyhow. Moral of the story: people suck.
Tickets to Ali memorial gone in about hour

Ali insisted the tickets for his memorial be free. But some people are looking to turn a profit. Some ticket holders immediately went online offering to sell their tickets.

Others posted online pleas to buy tickets. One wrote that he and his mother were driving in from Chicago for the service for the boxing great and willing to pay $50 for two tickets.

One of the posters offering to sell tickets who was reached by phone by The Associated Press said a friend of his sold tickets to the memorial service. When asked for how much, he hung up.
