I wouldn't give him more than a 2 year deal, probably a one year deal, but there aren't a lot of defenders out there in free agency this summer so he could get some premium dollars based on the lack of depth in the market.
This isn't anything at all. I texted my Sharks buddies and I guess the Sharks openly stated all year that they were not going to resign Boyle, who is a UFA this year.
Not sure what the Islanders are doing. Tavares is entering his peak right now, and aside from guys like Okposo, they really don't have any help for him to play with. They messed around with trading Moulson for Vanek earlier, and then still unloaded Vanek at the trade deadline.
I really feel bad for the Islanders fan base because there is no direction. They are finally out of the shadow of the DiPietro contract but have been messing around with old goalies like Nabokov, and old defenseman like Visnovsky and now Boyle.
Best example of how inept they are is that they had Nino Niederreiter, their 5th overall pick a few years back, and they set a new policy of not rushing guys to the NHL, so he sat in the minors for 2-3 years. He got pissed off and demanded a trade, so they sent him to Minnesota and he has been really good for them.
They also suffer from that whole "Not sucking enough" (heyo!) dilemma. They have been bad for a long time, but not bad enough to get top 3 picks. Like the Kings during the 2000s, where they were bad, but not bad enough to get a top 2-3 pick consistently. They were getting more like 5-10 picks, which yielded good players, but not game changers. Doughty was the #2 overall and you can see what a huge difference those top 2-3 players make. Chicago got Patrick Kane (#1: 2007) and Jonathan Toews (2006: #3) in back to back years, which were both Top 3. Penguins got Crosby (#1: 2005), Malkin (#2: 2004), and Fleury (#1: 2003) in Top 2 three years in a row. That's what makes Edmonton such a rarity. 3 straight first overall picks and they can't even avoid the bottom of the league (And another #3 overall coming this year).
