holy christ

In a cruel twist of irony, the accident was grimly reminiscent of a championship battle Franchitti was involved in back in 1999. On that day, his best friend, Greg Moore, was killed in virtually the same type of impact in a single-car crash on Lap 10 in the final race of the season. Moore's father, Ric, was at Sunday's race, his first time attending an IndyCar race since his son was killed 12 years ago.

this whole thing was unreal

just a sad event all around

on the video in the OP

at about 2:38 look at the black car behind the white car in the middle, that black car is Wheldon's car

watch that car

that crash he had was absolutely brutal, he flew for a long time.

I have been a fan of open wheel racing for 20 years and it really can be tough to follow. It is such a small group of guys and you really feel like you get to know them. Dan didn't have a ride for one of the races following his Indy 500 win and another driver was driving his car. Well, he was doing commentary in the booth with the guys and was so funny and interesting to listen to. He kept saying "be careful, that's my Indy car" when the other guy was getting close to people. It really was witty and fun to hear him.

He has a young wife and two young sons. All of my thoughts and prayers are with him. Racers race, and I am sure that Dan is getting fitted for a new firesuit and seat in a better place right now.

 :(

Rep. Absolutely true. I'm a huge fan of Open Wheel too, although I was burnt out on during the "split" years. There's always a soft spot for open wheelers who go to other series.

RIP Dan. A true "good guy" out there. His Indy win this year was awesome.

Poor reporting is poor. Whoever wrote that couldn't take the understated route, could they? It's not enough that Moore's dad was at a race for the first time since Greg's death. That should be way more than enough to get at the heartstrings. But he had to go and throw the "similarities" between the two accidents in. Except that the only similarities are that they were open wheelers and both drivers died. Moore's wreck was blunt force side impact (and I still get chills thinking about it), and Dan went airborne and rolled hitting the catch fence with his helmet.
