i refuse to watch that right now. just give the heat the championship. lamest thing i ever heard of. 3 random free agents get together to join the same team because 2 of them can not win on their own team.

So back to the science...

I was playing baseball, that's why I disappeared.

Anyway, since I'm studying kinetics, and since one of the products of the reaction absorbs at 470 nm, it really doesn't matter to my study what causes that brown tint. Also, since I'm only using a visible spectrometer, there's a lot of information getting lost. But a visible spectrometer is all that is necessary to measure the formation of this product.

Anyway, the study is looking at the three-reaction redox cycle between horseradish peroxidase, guaiacol, and hydrogen peroxide, and searching for kinetic inhibitors to that reaction among compounds found in drugs, like ibuprofen, which is what I was working with today. So we measure rates for uninhibited kinetics (the data is compiled but not yet analyzed), and then the inhibited kinetics (still compiling data on that) and compare them.

The motivation for it is that horseradish peroxidase is a proposed prodrug therapy for cancer treatment. The body does not produce HRP, but taking a DNA pill or injection or something, with a code to produce it, the body will start to produce it, and it will tend to do so especially in tumorous areas. A bi-product of this process is a substance that is highly toxic to cancer cells but not to normal, healthy cells. So this HRP would form in tumors and the process would then kill those tumors.

But it's believed that things like aspirin and ibuprofen, among other over-the-counter drugs (I think Tylenol is actually a catalyst to the reaction, so I don't think we'll be studying that one), might slow down the reaction and cause less of this toxin to be produced, reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. So we're doing kinetic studies to confirm or deny that claim, so that if this treatment ever gets used in common cancer treatments, concessions and warnings can be made concerning these over-the-counter drugs.

So if you ever get cancer (God forbid) and use this HRP prodrug treatment, and your doctor tells you not to take ibuprofen, you can think to yourself, "Thanks, Darkstone, for doing the research that is keeping me from limiting my life-saving treatment's effectiveness. I knew you were awesome for some reason."

=)

That's why I'm not watching ESPN

I'm not anymore, but you know it'll be the only thing they talk about. Thought I saw earlier that Oswalt 1-hit the Pirates and Danks and Santana both threw complete games against each other. Not a peep about it.

We don't talk about it.

hey last time i saw the pirates they were pretty good. or were we just that bad?

You saw the Pirates at PNC Park. The Pirates at PNC Park are a pretty decent team. The Pirates against the Cubbies are a World Series contender. The Pirates against the rest of the league are bad. The Pirates against the rest of the league on the road are an utter atrocity.

No offense Dark, but I'd rather talk about that then having ESPN shove the same interview in my face 5 different times in a half hour.

That's why I went out and actually played baseball. Though, the group of us, among whom only three had ever played baseball, looked a lot like the Pirates.
