I read this morning that some of the campers were hiding (knowing the "cop" was the killer) and watched other campers run up to the "cop" to get help only to be shot and killed as they approached them. Even the survivors of this are going to be scarred for a long time to come.

Also, I can't believe the Norwegian justice system has a maximum penalty of 21 years. They can hold indivduals deemed "dangerous to society" for longer. I understand not having the death penalty, but a max. sentence of 21 years seems crazy. Then again, their crime rate, murder rate, and recidivism rate is ridiculously low compared to my country.

Not trying to move this into a thread debating the merits of the US prison system vs. the Norwegian, but I read this article a couple months back and found it very interesting, especially the indication that this prison has the lowest rate of recidivism in Europe:

It is hard to compare crime rates etc between two countries that are so different:

Population size
Urbanicity
Immigration rate
Etc...

The recidivism rate is fantastic however.
