I mean, I think they should get it. That's too much money, and too long of a period, to not be severe. That article compares it to both the SMU and USC cases, and the USC case wasn't even CLOSE to this one, and they had some hefty punishment.

Man, that is some crazy stuff.

I think the NCAA sanctions are always so hard because (1) it seems like about 80% of the big-time football and basketball programs "cheat" in some way and (2) the punishment often hurts coaches and players down the road that weren't involved in the scandal, not to mention that when you take away big program revenue it often results in smaller sports getting cut to compensate. Such a mess.

I love when people throw around the term "death penalty". Without looking it up, does anyone know what the death penalty entails. This is not a judgement on the posters either, but the media, who labelled it as such...

I think they're just using it now because that's how it was labeled in the SMU case. I assume though, that it would entail program suspension for a year. Something like that. No TV contract, take away scholarships, bowl games, etc. etc.

Seriously, the worst thing that could happen to Tech would be the suspension of Jacory Harris....

So you know that one of the reasons that it will most likely never be used again is that it hurts other teams and the conference as well. When it was placed on SMU it essentially began the death rattle of the SWC.

If you say that Miami misses an entire season and/or is not allowed on TV, it crushes smaller teams who get a ton of publicity for their players the week they play Miami.

It was doable back in the day when maybe 5 games were shown a week on TV, but it would be really bad for everyone else right now. VT, GT, FSU would all be fine because they have every game televised, but FAU, UCF and others need that week of television for their players.

The greatest punishment they could give them is stripping scholarships.

Right....but that is punishing future players and a brand new coach for the deeds of the past....

It is the best plan. In addition, they should release the 2011 class from their letters of intent, but that is highly unlikely.

The most screwed people in all of this are the incoming freshman, and th 90% of the football team that did not break any rules. They will be banned from bowl games, etc, for the actions of guys aready getting paid in the NFL.

Exactly, it is unfair, but it's the only way to punish Miami without hurting other schools in the process. Not a whole lot fair about it, but it is what it is. I agree that the '11 class should be released from their letters...that's only fair.

No death penalty is neccessary. Every big time school cheats, there is no doubt about it. Miami just got caught. By giving them the death penalty you are setting the standard for discipline with this type of stuff, which means when Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Oregon, etc. get busted you have to give them the same punishment. Can't do that.

Punish them by making them play Virginia Tech every week. We have knocked three of their starting quarterbacks OUT OF FOOTBALL (not just out of the game, but they up and quit) in the past decade. We want a schedule that can allow us to go undefeated. VT-Miami twelve weeks in a row. It solves both of our problems!!!

One of the dumbest and most incorrect assumption of the masses. Every team could be dinged and dinked for the 5 dollar bus ticket here or the comped dinner there, but a tiny minority pull this or UNC level stuff.

This MYTH ir propogated by the short attention span of the media consumer and the media's drive to get people to watch. As I mentioned in another thread, and if you follow my college football stuff over on those boards, I have been out ahead of just about all of these stories and know a lot from the inside. The vast majority of programs try to do things right and have control. However, news gets on the news, while non-news does not. It is the nature of the beast.

Disagree. There have been plenty in the know that claim that team's "bend the rules" all the time. Realistically what is the difference between say Michigan and Ohio State? The two schools are nearly identical, so if you are a recruit that is on the fence what is swaying you?

You are going to believe what you want, but the majority of coaches and programs are trying their best to do things right. The wording of a lot of the NCAA rules does not help, but this is not as rogue as people make it out to be based on 8-10 programs.

It is at the most 10-12 players on a team.

It is at most 10% of all of the teams.

You are making some pretty hefty generalizations about an entire culture based on a pretty damn small number. I thought that we as a nation and a people had moved past such things.

cant see the pic at work, but i assume it has something to do with jacory completing more passes to VT players than his own players.. or maybe even more than tyrod completed to VT players?
