I have a job offer in Maine. Do I want to live there? I have not been there since I was a kid.
Tell me what you can, thanks.

I was born and raised in South Portland, Maine. I lived there until I was 35 and then took a position in Mass.

My wife has her sibs all still there and I have a sister in Windham.

Maine is a heavily taxed state. They have an income tax, sales tax and of course property tax. They have annual excise tax on vehicles and an annual license fee. It's cheaper than Calif., Mass. or Conn.

A lot depends on where you'll be living. The further north you go, the more expensive it is to live. If you're going to be working in the Portland area you can find a pretty decent property within 25 miles.

If you want to send me a personal mail, I'd be more than happy to discuss anything with you.

Love Maine and all the New England States. Lived in three, worked in 4.
They are all too expensive for me now.
New England has a heroine problem. (I know, TN has a meth problem) but at least in TN criminals are not considered the victim.

But boy do I miss home.
I know, no help.

I have lived in Belfast, ME for the past 2 years and previously lived in MA all my life. Biggest problem I see here is lack of jobs or that there are so many small towns you may be far away from work, so it sounds like you have the biggest obstacle taken care of. People here seem more down to earth and maybe more friendly. I have not seen any heroin use, but prescription drug use is rampant. Painkillers, benzos, and ritalin are all the rage.

I'm looking at a job in Augusta Maine. Small town - looks nice. Hard to tell about a town if you have not been there. Rents look cheap, homes look average. High taxes would not be fun but after a lifetime of running a business, I know how to do my taxes. I would likely stay there 2 years and then go back overseas. Hell, I lived in the Middle East, how bad can Maine be?

Personally, I like warm weather. A few things I do miss about MA and New England but I wouldn't want to live up there again. Good luck Southie!!

Just finished the interview. It's too late here to be poked and prodded. I have been the interviewer most of my life. I'm not sure I'm emotionally made for some middle management shit to ask me a bunch of questions.......

Augusta is the capital of Maine. It's not really a small town but more of a small city. You could do a lot worse. Your 30 miles north of Lewiston-Auburn and 60 miles north of Portland. Houses and rents a very reasonable in that area and you may be able to pick up a mansion in Waterville for what you'd pay for a bungalow in Mass.Waterville is really nice and only about 10 minutes from Augusta via 95. Good Luck

Augusta is a reasonably sized city which is good because the winters can be pretty rough and isolated otherwise. I think the state can be beautiful for most of the year in a New England kind of way especially along the coast. Steven King has lived in Bangor all his life... :)

There are lots of worse places. Maine is great if you can find work. Also if you like the four seasons (which i do) and enjoy fresh seafood (which I also enjoy). I use to spend my summers just outside of Lewiston on a lake. Man it's hard to beat that tranquility. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

Ahhh... the lakes of New England.
30' deep and you can see the bottom like it's 3' deep.

My son was 4 when we were driving home one summer. As we crossed Lake Bomoseen outside of Rutland he exclaimed "Mommy! Did you see that water!? You can see right through it!!!"

Obviously, TN waters are a bit murky.

Thank you guys. I had a good interview so it looks like I'll have to make a decision. I don't want to leave Okinawa right now but there is a limit by regs how long I can stay.
I learned to swim as 4yo in a granite quarry in Gloucester. It was 200 feet deep or deeper and you could see way down there.
The job would be a very interesting one and I'm paid well. Living in the low cost of living area is a plus. I love heat and I don't miss the snow. Maybe a snowmobile would change that?
Some have mentioned drug problems in Maine. Is Augusta having probs? Or is that just NE in general?????

Heroin has become rampant in NH and MA. Over two hundred OD deaths in the past year and half. Doesn't appear to have made a big push to Maine or Vt.

Gov. Shumlin (VT) made a public announcement a few years ago that there was a heroin epidemic in VT. I read the papers there, online, and every day there is something about heroin or prescription painkillers. Yes, opiates are a problem all through New England.
But where are they not.

Not here. There is almost no crime here. I don't lock my car or my house. I have valuable stuff sitting open to a busy street......
