OK. I was having a pain-in-the-ass day today and my wife had asked me to pick up a bottle of wine at the liquor store near my office for a retirement gift later this week. I needed to get out so I head to the liquor store.

The wine she asked me to pick up was on sale. My day is improving. I browse a bit and decide to keep the good vibe going. I go into the cooler and buy a nice tall boy for this afternoon.

I get back to my office, crack the can and get back to work. I'm about 3 sips in when the fire alarm goes off. In my experience fire alarms in my building can cause shutdowns for dozens of hours (the presence of some chemicals in the labs cause issues from time to time). I grab my keys, my jacket and my beer and make for the staircase. I'm not letting that thing go flat!!!

Outside, the safety officer for the company (a good friend of mine), and several of my co-workers, sees me sipping a can of beer on the lawn and just shakes his head.

If they send me to detox I hope it's in Hawaii. :yahoo:

Well it was rude of you for not bringing enough for everyone else. Didn't you see Blazing Saddles when the bad guy didn't bring gum for all of the others in line?

What kind of beer?

It was a BC beer. It's called Thirsty Beaver from the Tree Brewing Company in Kelowna.

Only 5% alc/vol? You should move up to the XXX high test. What are those? something like 7.2 to 7.4? :yahoo:

Ahhhh, they were just jealous.... I like to have a cold one at lunch as long as I'm not meeting a customer afterwards.

I do research for a geotechnical engineering company.

I have a tiny little office to myself. I operate machinery when I'm out in the field (geophysical equipment, quads, snowmobiles, etc.). When I'm in the office the heaviest equipment I operate is a keyboard.

The job is about results. If I get my work done on time my boss generally doesn't care where I do it or during what hours. I'm pretty free to do what I want. If I waste time in my office on SportsHoopla and having a beer (this is actually the first time I've done that) my boss, and I, know that I'll just have to get the work done later.

It's pretty relaxed.

Nothing on earth beats a boss that gets that. Mine would draw the line at alcohol consumption (but probably only because what I produce often finds it's way into court) but otherwise the standing rule is "Don't make me look stupid. Get things done".

I will occasionally blow off steam by rollerblading around the parking garage or will sit in the cafeteria (provided there is no smell of curry) and watch sportscenter and eat popcorn for 45 minutes. a three hour lunch to go across town to a bike shop is not at all unheard of. As long as I get shit done and don't make her look stupid, it's all good.

I'm actually not sure how my boss might have reacted if he came into my office stressed and saw me having a beer. I think he'd probably just laugh and say something like: " Aren't you glad I didn't have a client with me?" I'm pretty sure he'd be fine with it 98% of the time. I mean I can work at home 80 % of the time if I want. I don't because I'm not as productive at home.

In short he's the kind of guy to rip you if a report is of poor quality, not because you took an afternoon off to go skiing or play golf.

You're right though, it is nice to have a boss who treats you like an adult. I've had the opposite and I can tell you that I cared a whole hell of a lot lees about my job and the company than I do about my current employers.
