I went to the world cup when it was in the U.S. in 1994. Even though I was only 5 it was still one of the coolest sports events I've ever been to.

Well...it may be the US's turn in 2026 then. They should work on their bid now (although China somehow thinks they have dibs on it). It's already been in Europe (4 years ago), Africa (this year), will be in South America soon (2014), "Asia" in 2018 (Russia is kinda on it's own, but still Asia), and Middle East in 2022. Basically it's North America's turn...

They certainly could line FIFA's pockets with their...errr...whale blubber money. (Sorry...that's all I got...not like they have a big return in taxes.)

They may just give them a whole bunch of penguins. Morgan Freeman can do the voiceover of the bribe ceremony.

This reminds me a bit of how they used to handle the WJHC. They would go anywhere but Canada for a while.

What's wrong with England for 2018? Or how about Spain/Portugal? That would have been great.

If they want to grow the game (hardly possibly at this point) why wouldn't they go to one of the most populous nations on the planet, Indonesia.

Dash has it right. This is all about the cash.

FIFA changed their rotational policy after awarding 2014 to Brazil, so it's only the last two that can't host anymore. So Europe won't be eligible again until 2030 because Russia is a member of UEFA (rather than AFC) and Asia won't be eligible again until 2034 because of Qatar's hosting.

Since they don't earmark for a specific continent anymore, the US will still have to compete with Africa, S. America, and Oceania (unlikely a threat since Australia is part of AFC), not to mention the rest of N. America.

This assumes of course that FIFA doesn't change policies again. And a lot can happen in 16 years.

Plus in '02 it was in Korea/Japan which is more Asia than Russia. So North America hasn't held a WC the longest time of any other continent

Has the US held ANY major soccer Tourney since 94? Not including the Women's WC (which was still only a few years after that...although twice), because that's just different...in the Women's case there are far fewer countries that can handle it (have to be more developed and...well, accepting of women in sport really).

Indonesia didn't bid for 2018 and didn't even make it to the point of a proper bid for 2022 because the government didn't support it.

I guess that depends on what you count as major :D

They had the Olympic tournament in '96, though this maybe doesn't count since it's not awarded by FIFA.

They also hosted the CONCACAF Gold Cup every time since 1991 (though they co-hosted I think 2x with Mexico).

Besides the WC the Gold Cup and Olympics are two of the largest tournaments they are even eligible to host. The only others (that I know of) being the Confederations Cup (which is automatically given to the upcoming WC host) and the UX World Cups.

Does anyone have the numbers on how many people typically travel to the World Cup each year? Qatar doesn't even have 2 million people living there. You get too many travelers and it'll reach a point where the infrastructure in Qatar won't be able to keep up.

Along the lines of what Dash said, I'll be interested to see when all is said and done just how much each FIFA official got paid to vote for Qatar to host.
