I have actually seen this in print: It's a hard road to hoe.

No shit, could it be because it's a row you hoe and not a road. Roads usually are hard, especially if they are paved or it's been a while since it last rained if it's a dirt road. But I guess with the lack of manual farm work being done these days most people have never had to hoe a row.
