Sarah Phillips began as a commentor/poster on Covers (a gambling website), and was then picked up to be a freelance writer for their site, and then was picked up as freelance on ESPN. That's her background. Now however multiple people are coming forward and revealing her as some sort of new age con-artist when it comes to social media. Target one was a guy from the Covers site who fell into the trap by sending her money because he gave her 'bad betting advice', and he was basically being nice and said "here's some money to help get some advertisement on your new site". He seemed pretty naive though...but thought they were friends. Target two was a guy who had a FB page for NBA memes, one of Sarah's friends told him to email her, and then Sarah and another mystery guy conned him out of his page by taking over administrative rights and promising him money to make memes for a new page they were making. No money lost, but he lost his page (and it's 300k fans), so he was just ticked a bit. Third target had his twitter page taken by her after she asked his advice on how to gain followers. She promised him money (saying it was advertisement money, mentioned ESPN affiliation, etc.) if he got her followers, he fell sort of the biggest money goal, and said he'd sell her his twitter account (20k followers) for $500, she agreed, but never paid. After he requested the money and never got it, he requested his page back...she got extremely defensive (as she did when confronted with betting man) and said she'd sue him.

She craaaaazy.

It's OK for crazy ladies to make things up in the kitchen. In a man's world, not so much. :D

It doesn't seem like the scam was that big. I am kind of shocked with the fascination with the story.

It continues to grow. I think what is fascinating is that one: she got away with it for well over a year, and two: it's a whole new light on social media. I mean she's stealing facebook groups and twitter accounts, promising money, and using followers as some form of currency. The more followers/fans you have, the more you get in advertising. She's freaking 22 years old, addicted to gambling, seems to be deluded into thinking she's something she's not, and already quite adept at scamming people.

The Sarah Phillips mystery goes way beyond ESPN and into the farthest reaches of the Twitterverse | May

She stole the @OhWonka account, didn't pay them, and started using it to pump her own tires. It's not terrible, but what's interesting is HOW it's being done. It's not just straight up money being taken.

It's also interesting that some classmates from HS are saying that they think the Nilesh guy is the mastermind. I mean, I hate how intrigued I am by it, mostly because the more you talk about it, the more they get what they want: notoriety.

When I clicked on that link, my AV warned of a malware javascript (.js). FYI.

Thanks for the heads up. I have AdBlock, so I think that may have taken care of it.

so she's stealing accounts that get a lot of views and selling advertisements on these pages/accounts? is that the profit for her?

or is she actually writing articles on espn and getting loads of hits because she pumps her tires on all these highly viewed accounts (twitter/facebook/etc) and therefore generating a lot of revenue for espn for ads and she's getting kickbacks?

She was writing for ESPN, but the only way that was associated was by her name dropping it to her targets. It made them trust her a bit more, and after she got that job it took off. People saw a name that they saw on ESPN and thought she was legitimate. And she pretended that her friend also worked at ESPN and that "people there" wanted to buy this sports comedy idea.

That's strange, I didn't have experience at all. I don't think anyone should be concerned about reading the article. It's totally a real Deadspin page. People shouldn't be concerned at all.

Anyhow, I wanted to encourage people to follow Sarah Phillips. Her writing is hilarious and insightful at the same time. What a rare gift! I also hear she needs some small investments for a project that will rake in BIG dough. With a little capital help, she could make you rich!

Can't wait to see my Washington State Capital win the hockey match later today. I'm putting $600 on the over/under.

At the risk of sounding like a jackass, is there a Cliff's Notes version of that novel? :p

I clicked the link last night and tried reading and started scrolling and... holy shit.. I had to give up because I didn't have 3 hours to spend, even though it sounded interesting.

Some bitch told people she would give them money, and then didn't, and she also told some people she would give them things in return for money, but never gave them the things.
