I was at the Starbucks Support Center for the Olympia quake of 2001 - That was a healthy 6.8 magnitude and thankfully the building I was in (which was originally built in 1912) was retrofitted to withstand earthquakes.

The best joke I have heard has been posted by at least 100 of my facebook friends. <some thing something> Earthquake, it was <something something> STEELERS FANS!

I don't pay a lot of attention, especially when I have been traumatized by QUAKEMAGEDDON 2011! Here in Columbus Ohio I was within ten feet of a window that shook a little. AND IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH - My pen rolled off the table. ALL BY ITSELF!! hold me

I found out that my company evacuated one of our offices. In Toledo. FUCKING TOLEDO.

I spent a lot of time in San Fran after the 89 quake, and I fear quakes more than anything else on earth (even tornadoes). But the over-reaction of people more than 200 miles from the epicenter of a minor quake has been comical.

hell, i learned about the quake on here, and I've been crying for hours.

5.8 in SoCal is a "meet the neighbors" quake. If you feel it you go outside to see if there are any cracks in the stucco and all the neighbors ask "Any damage at your place".
I would guess if a 5.8 happened in a more populated area the damage would be worse than here because the building codes are different.

5.9 earthquake hits east coast. Standard and Poor's then downgrades it to 5.3.

voicemail form my mother in Florida, all kinds of concerned.

really?
I should call her and make sure she knows that the one of her grandsons matchbox cars rolled an inch. Were not exactly sure it was the earthquake that caused it, but we are all ok nonetheless.

her actual sign off... vertbatim...

"as long as you're okay, fine. If you're not give a call, or whatever, bye bye."

So only if I'm not ok should I call?
I have no idea what to do there.

I live in Minnesota. If we feel a quake here it is because CALIFORNIA HAS BEEN REDUCED TO RUBBLE.

The largest quake we've ever had was 4.6.

Uhh.. a 5.8 tickler is not really an earthquake, silly East coast people! :p

Sincerely,
A Southern California resident.

EDIT: Did they really evacuate the White House?

when buildings aren't built for earthquakes...

I found out that my company evacuated one of our offices. In Toledo. FUCKING TOLEDO.

It's kind of the same deal with people in the south getting an inch of snow...people don't know how to react, and the infrastructure is not there to deal with it (snow plows/salt trucks/architecture).
