A few other cities (Stockton Ca) have but Detroit is the biggest one to do it. I was reading a few weeks ago about the situation in Detroit and it is TERRIBLE. Out of control violence a gutted police dept. Closed schools and thousands of empty buildings, blocks and blocks of streets that at one time had homes they said they could make urban farms out of them.

It's so sad it's not funny if the Wings were looking for money from the city they can forget it and the state isn't in much better shape. The story I read was "Detroit, The decline of a once great city" The pictures spoke 1000 words.

Check out these pics. truly sad.

Democrats and unions and corruption. A deadly mixture.

Not to get too political but yes, they said a very corrupt city government (been going on for years) has helped lead to the downfall.

They interviewed one cop that said he covers an area of about 20 sq miles alone ! That's fucking nuts.

i think this is going to get re-tweeted a bit

Barack Obama ‏@BarackObama 25 Oct Obama: “I wasn't going to let Detroit go bankrupt. Or Toledo go bankrupt. Or Lordstown go bankrupt. I bet on American workers.”

The real question is whether you got the reference without having to look it up.

I did a school project on Polychlorinated Biphenyls and made it a video report. I used all the toxic waste scenes from Robocop for examples of what could happen if toxic waste got into our systems (overkill I know :D) I also used all the commercials from the movie and put them in my report as commercials as well. :D

at one time I think I may have been able to lipsync that movie.

Thanks for the kind words BOSSMAN. What your saying to true. I love my city, but it isn't pretty and it isn't safe. Maybe there will be a future for Detroit and the USA, but we have to get off our asses and have pride again.

For anyone that would like a good inside look into the death of Detroit, check out "Detroit: An American Autopsy" by Charlie LeDuff. I thought it was a really good read. Sad, but good.

I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. It's been run by corrupt politicians for years. It would probably be cheaper to pay all the residents a stipend to move, hire bulldozers and cover it all up. Let the archeologists figure it out in a thousand years when someone finds it.

700k people in a city who's infrastructure used to support 1.2M, and a widely spread out 1.2M at that. The people that remain are mostly poor, jobless, and don't have a taxable income, leaving the city with a massively bloated public works, police, fire, power, water, sewer, and road network with a tiny tax base to cover it. We can point fingers all day long about how this happened, but at this point the only things that matter are getting the corruption out of the city government, figuring out the finances, and shrinking the city. The city literally needs to shrink to survive, they need to abandon entire swaths and neighborhoods and stop sinking tax dollars into it. It's a messy, nasty situation, and I don't know what the solution will be.

Next up and on deck...CHICAGO! Yes, the murder capital of the US. Rampant corruption, a declining tax base, union led and run, pensions run amok. Illinois, the state listed as the 50th worst state to live in financially has a $1 billion pension deficit. Yet, the stupid ass legislators led by union fed crooked Democrat Michael Madigan can't come up with ANY plan to tackle the pension crisis outside of raising taxes even more and distributing the wealth (ie just give even more money to Chicago).

I live in the northwest suburban area. I live in what I call a modest 2500 sq ft house...nothing decadant. I appealed my real estate taxes two years ago and they lowered the assessment of my house $40,000. Yes, $40,000! Guess what? My taxes increased $820.

Last year, appealed again. My assessment went down another $15,000. Guess what? My taxes went up $640.

The state of Illinois and the tax assessor plays games with the tax base. Even though your property value is reduced, the assessor raises the "multiplier" to compensate for the lost revenue. And then the douchebag taxing bodies, each and every one of them, raises their percentage to the maximum allowable.

Now, my daughter graduated from high school 6 years ago. At that time, her school had almost 5,000 students (yes our school district is huge, with only one high school). Since then the high school census has dropped by 911 students..or approximately 16%. Instead my taxes have steadily increased, with 64% of my taxes going to the primary and high school districts.

My real estate taxes are now as much as my mortgage payment. Pathetic.

I can't wait to retire in a few years and get the hell out of Illinois. The most mismanaged state in all of the US.
