I've only played for a few hours and died 5-10 times, but here's the scoop so far (minor spoilers):
People keep saying the game hates you. This simply isn't true. The game just doesn't give a fuck about you one way or the other. If you get too close to the edge of a cliff, the game isn't gonna keep you on with some sort of magic sticky ledge - you are going to fall to your death. And you ARE going to fall to your death; after the tutorial level ends you are going to get mighty used to watching your guy fall to his death unless you actively pull enemies to safe areas.
I've gotten to and past the second boss (the Minotaur guy). There's a relatively simple strategy for killing him, but if you aren't observant enough to see it, the game isn't going to attract your attention to the way you can do it. No, it's just going to kill you.
I like the Wanderer so far. Scimitar is a good starting weapon, and she can get access to miracles pretty easy, which allows you to journey a bit farther before having to retreat to a bonfire (which respawns all the enemies, whoo). With two exceptions, the enemies I've encountered have been relatively easy so long as you don't get ganged up on and have some basic pattern recognition (hmm, the skeleton is pulling his sword back, wonder what that means). The two exceptions either take of 2/3rds of your health in one swing, or take off ALL your health in one swing. Fortunately they are optional at this point. Right now I'm stuck at a (SPOILERS) bridge with a giant fucking dragon on it. I think I know how to get past but I figured I'd call it a night.
Will report more as I get a chance to play more; probably not tomorrow though because I want to watch the Flyers game.
