Cormac McCarthy (The Road = disturbing, Outer Dark = more disturbing)
Frederick Forsyth (Dogs of War is incredible)
Brett Easton Ellis
Thomas Wolfe

Good call 46, Cormac has def unique style of writing.

If you like mystery/spy type stuff read A lot of David Morrell He wrote Rambo, but his other novels are better, also any Ludlum book is entertaining, too bad they ruined the Bourne Series!

maybe i'm weird, but i normally enjoyed most of the books i was forced to read in HS. i mean, not all of them, but a decent amount. i HATE HATE HATE Dickens though. the man would take five pages to describe a freaking table, and 2 lines of dialogue to balance it out. there were some that i thought were too weird to really enjoy (Brave New World anyone??), but most, when it got down to it, were good. some of my favorites were HS reads (To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, etc.)

I have trouble getting into Ludlum. I get bored and stop but maybe I am reading the wrong ones. I read The Aquitaine Progression and the Scorpio Vendetta and then quit reading his stuff. I can read some of Forsyth's books over and over. The Devil's Alternative, Day of the Jackal and Dogs of War being the best. I like the LeCarre books and the Jack Ryan series by Clancy (although some of the books seemed like space filler). I like getting a book that I am going to be reading for a while. Steve Berry is not bad. I will check out David Morrell. I love the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child cycle, but do not like Child's stand alone books. I also like the Ted Bell books but he is getting a little bit out there with some of his stuff.

The Big Short by Michael Lewis. Nonfiction about those who saw the housing bubble for what it was about to become and made hundreds of millions of dollars off it. After reading it, you'll understand why financial reform is needed.

I plan on reading that one Canada Day weekend

Me too. Always good fun. I think both solo works are OK, but not really high on my list. I think I am a couple books behind on the solo stuff.

Moby Dick was published in 1851 from a real life event that happened in 1820.

On November 20th, 1820, a whaling vessel called the Essex was attacked and sunk by a Sperm Whale. That was then first time a Whale ever attacked a Ship in the open waters.

If anyone enjoyed HBO's "The Pacific" I recommend Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie. Its what Leckie's story in the miniseries was based on. I liked it for its common language, mainly due to the fact that it was a former soldier writing it.

Cujo and Of Mice And Men. People are generally surprised when they find out that I enjoy Steinbeck. Ok ok, people are generally surprised when they find out I can read.

I'm a simple man, so I don't get into too many complex stories. It really showed what a writing style could do to things that appear so mundane.

I also enjoyed a book I read in school, "Where the Red Fern Grows". About A boy and his two hunting dogs. I made my wife read it recently, and she made me promise to read a Mitch Albom book in return. Wish I had time to sit down and read more than one chapter at a time!

I just finished a book called The Passage by Justin Cronin. I thought it was great. Medical/military experiments go wrong unleashing strangely contaminated men into the world, just about ending it all. Think The Stand with vampires.

I agree with you, I dont know the last time I read anything vampire related.

I used the word "vampires" for lack of a better word, though it is used in the book by some, but they are not vampires in the traditional sense. They are tough to kill, very strong and very fast almost mindless hunters. No talking, no emotions, no clothes, no emo or goth makeup (lol). Just creatures looking to tear apart and feed on anything they can.

I haven't had time/inclination to read much new stuff these days. Doing enough reading for a (dry) course I'm taking.

For non-fiction I enjoy reading war stuff. On a Canadian slant, "Vimy" by Pierre Burton is probably my fave.

As for the other stuff I read, it's usually the fantasy setting a la Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings stuff. I don't actually read Potter, but Potter-like stuff... for adults.

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan is by far the best written series of this genre.
I'm also really into the George RR Martin series, "A Song of Fire and Ice". The first book is called "A Game of Thrones". Going to have to reread this series as the next book is about to come out.
For pageturning fluff of this genre, can't go wrong with R.A. Salvatore and anything involving Drizzt Do'Urden. My fave author and character/setting when I was a teen and young adult. Still holds up today.

Scared to admit it but "Hitman" the autobiography of Bret Hart was a damned fine read.

I have not watched wrestling in years, and have no real interest in it but heard the book was good so I checked it out. I enjoyed it. I didnt know steroids were around so long. It was obvious by the end of the 80s, but there were there much earlier.
