i realize not everyone is a big reader, but i thought i'd start this, especially now that we're without hockey. So what are some of your favorites? What did you just finish reading?

My favorites will still have to be the HP series...i'm a geek. i know. and i just finished reading Shutter Island (now i HAVE to see the movie).

I read Shutter Island about a year ago... it was a good read, but I kinda knew what was coming about half way through it.

Some of my all-time favourites (yes, I'm a nerd too):

LOTR series
Catcher in the Rye
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
Animal Farm

I can't remember the last time I read a novel. I think it was a holiday to Mexico about 5 years ago where I worked through all of Dan Brown's stuff. It was interesting to see his writing style develop, but they weren't really great books. Every single one had an element of dues ex machina,

I tend to like John Grisham, Tom Clancy kind of stuff, went through a Stephen King phase before that (probably as a teenager).

the last book I remember really enjoying start to finish was Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. Amazing (and tragic) story behind the book, too.

I don't hate people who read books, but I hate people that always have to say how much better the book is than the movie.

Anyone ever read "Fever Pitch?" It's a great book by Nick Hornby and while the movie was allegedly based on the book, it really is nothing like the movie, especially since it's about growing up and being a soccer fan. It kind of chronicles events in his life paralleled by achievements by his favorite soccer team, Arsenal. Very good book that details the agony, joy, paranoia, superstition, fanaticism, and undying love that is being a sports fan.

Currently reading "Fool" by Christopher Moore. It's a parody of King Lear, and it is bloody hilarious. Also, reading "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. Very good novel thus far.

In terms of series, I would highly recommend A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. It is a fantasy series, but it kind of hits on all realms. HBO is adapting it into a series - set to air either in the Fall or Winter. Apparently, they knocked it out of the park. Sean Bean, Mark Addy, and Peter Dinklage all play big parts.

The Girl with a Dragon Tatoo is also a very good novel - recently turned movie.

Nick Hornby is a very talented writer.

The whiskey robber (or was it the whiskey bandit?) It's about a Transylvanian hockey player that turns to pelt smuggling and eventually bank robbery in post Communist Romania. True story.

For the most part, I really don't read novels. The last books I really read include:

Calculus
Reinforced Concrete Design
Scheduling and Construction Practices
Foundation Design
Physics for Scientists and Engineers
Differential Equations
Transportation Design and Analysis

etc, etc, etc...

I usually read the Bible when I'm not too busy working with neglected kids and women who were abused in their relationship.

That is when I'm not taking care of orphaned children from war ravaged areas around the World.
