Best band combining singer/songwriters: The Traveling Wilburys. George Harrison (who I think was a better songwriter than either Lennon or McCartney), Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. They were fantastic.

I think Ed Kowalcyzk from the band Live was quite underrated for his writing ability.

John Lennon was the best ever.

He also wrote "Something," which I believe Frank Sinatra called 'the greatest love song ever written." He was a fantastic songwriter, and really seemed to get lost in the shuffle with the Beatles.
