Just curious who some of you guys enjoy to listen to. And who is your favorite musician overall.

I know a lot of you guys dont like extreme metal. But anyone who enjoys acoustic and somewhat gloomy music, check out any song on the album Damnation by Opeth. The rest of their albums are progressive death metal, but this one is all mellow, and pure musical beauty... So all in all, my favorite singer/songwriter is Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth.

This album has been on repeat the past couple days, truly a masterpiece.

Lately it's been Johnny Cash. Even though I don't walk the line...

That's gotta burn burn burn...

Jack Wall is the best at composing video game soundtracks. No lyrics for the most part, considering they're for video games, but still some of the scores he's come up with are incredible.

I'll try to list more songwriters later when it's not 6AM...

Rep to anyone who's heard of this guy before reading this post.

Bernie Taupin wrote some great stuff for Reginald Dwight (better known as Elton John)

oddly, the guys who are the best sognwriters, would never be found on a list of best singers.
Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Greg Dulli, Robert Smith (the Cure) are my top songwriters.

favourite singers: Johnette Napolitano (concrete blonde), Chris Cornell (soundgarden), Rob Halford (judas priest) are tops for singers. And Chris Isaak.

If I had to pick one artist, it would probably be Greg Dulli (afghan whigs, twilight singers, gutter twins).

johnny cash is a great of course.

however

despite being a big name my pick is in my opinion unheralded for how good he actually is.

mr. dave grohl.

the guy can do EVERYTHING... along with the red hot chili peppers, i think the foo fighters is going going to be one of the lasting bands of my generation. they've pumped out good album one after another for about a decade now, and its largely in credit to him.

as bad as this may sound IMO kurt cobains death, career wise, was one of the best things to ever happen to dave grohl in an odd way.

nirvana sucked. no disrespect to kurt. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were the kings of that genre.

Check out Opeth's cover of "Would" by Alice In Chains.

My favorite songwriter is Bob Dylan, and I actually really like his voice, as well. The fact that I enjoy just sitting down and reading "Dignity," "Tangled Up in Blue," "Forever Young," and so on is a testament to his songwriting ability.

I also think Freddy Mercury should make the list. His range was phenomenal, and Queen turned out some musically brilliant compositions (though Mercury certainly got help, and I mean a lot of help, from the rest of his band in that regard). Thom Yorke is also a brilliant songwriter with a distinct voice, and again, it's not just the lyrics, but the originality of the sound that is so impressive.

And my last one is lesser-known. Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper has written some pretty loaded stuff. I really like that band.

Freddie Mercury was the best singer I've ever heard. Not the biggest of Queen fans (I like them but they're not really my genre), but the man could sing.

Best song writer? That's a much harder question. I'll get back to you on it...
