Saw Rush in '94 at the Worcester Centrum in Massachusetts. Peart has my vote.

Not sure if everyone will consider The Police rock, but Stewart Copeland's name should be mentioned when talking about the greatest drummers.

Neal Peart from Rush!!

Who could forget Tommy Lee and his drum solo from his spinning cage.

Not the best but fun to watch.

Saw him two years ago, tox. Not worthy of holding Portnoy's drumsticks.

Danny Carey would be my choice.

My screen name probably gives my choice away, but a couple others I like are:

Dale Crover and Cody Willis (Melvins):

and for an up and coming guy:

Chris Guanalo (Silversun Pickups):

that tune has a great groove. reminds me of some of the stuff the Afghan Whigs put out (another severely underrated band).
I was looking for the song "Be Sweet" which has a similar beat, but this one has a bit of an example as well (from the same album)
- drummer was Steve Earle, but not THAT Steve Earle

i haven't really followed metal since Niko McBain was kicking ass and takign names for Maiden.
for current guys in rock, I really enjoy what Dave Grohl is doing with Them Crooked Vultures.
not fancy, but ferocious.

I think every time this topic is discussed, someone usually mentions Animal form the Muppets withing the first 15 posts.

I am disappointed this time around. When this topic is discussed again in a couple of months, I expect to see a better showing. :)
