Going there in a month.

Keep reading it's a thieves' capital of the World.
Sites to see, safe neighbourhoods, places to eat - any suggestions, recommendations are greatly appreciated. TIA

A friend of mine has been there several times. Says she loves it, never once mentioned it being shady or grimy,

been to Madrid, not Barcelona

- food is terrific, wine is plentiful, the young women are beautiful they seem to hit a wall when they age)
- dinners don't really start until 10pm. A midnight seating is quite common.
- yes there are pick-pockets; use common sense.

Yes! Someone has been to Barcelona...just not me. ;)

Closest I have ever been would be Milan Italy.

The closest I've been to Europe is St Croix, British Virgin Islands...

Two of my sisters have been to Barcelona and they summed it up with the following phrases:

Leg warmers
Dry humping in the clubs
Public urination

That may sound odd but they insisted that it was an amazing trip. Enjoy it man.

I was there for a little less than a week in 2006. One of my favorite cities ever.

My friend and I spent a lot of time just wandering around the city. Las Ramblas is one of the central streets where this is a lot to do (cafes, shops, etc.), so I would recommend taking at least a few hours to check that out.

I'm not huge on art, but went to a couple museums. The Picasso museum was neat and worth a visit. If you're anything like me though, by the 47th room, you get tired of it, but definitely worth checking out.

The Gaudi museum was a bust. Just didn't care for it all that much.

We saw a Flamenco show there and it was really neat; we loved it. I would recommend checking one of those out, if possible.

The night life is great. There is a lot to do, and it seems that even by 2am, no one is ready to call it a night.

The people were friendly. Not sure about your Spanish, but most people there spoke English.

Overall, a great experience. When travelling, some of my best experiences were just taking days to check out different parts of cities. I like the spontaneity of it, but those are some recommendations I can give you.

Hope you have a great time!

Thanks Loki!
I'll be there for 10 days, will definitely check Ramblas. Actually, allocated a whole day for it.
Gaudi museum doesn't sound interesting, but I'll definitely check his actual works (Sagrada Familia, etc.)
For sure will go to Picasso (15 min walk from my hotel), Miro and Dali (road trip!) museums.
Turns out there will be La Mercè on 9/24, the biggest holiday in Barcelona: fireworks, dragons, marching bands, etc.

My Spanish is very rudimentary, but Frommer does not even recommend speaking Spanish: it's Catalonia and they are very nationalistic, better learn some Catalan :)

Sounds like you're going to have an awesome trip. Yeah, it's Catalonia, but when the situations arose, basic Spanish was adequate.

We took an entire day to check out Ramblas too. Great area.

Definitely will. I'm taking 16GB SD card with me, should be enough for 7000+ photos :)

Nice, back them up ASAP. I went to Paris, and went everywhere, took so many pics. When I got back my little bro stepped on my camera and shattered the card inside. Really, really, really, really sucked big time. I snuck pics inside some of the museums, and lost it all. Oh well, Paris sucked. Can't wait to go back to Europe though. Next time around, Germany/Austria/Switzerland.

I back them up after each trip.
Didn't help much, though, when I dropped my 2TB external HD last year.
Now it looks like HD, sounds like HD, just doesn't do anything. And somewhere deep inside has 7 years worth of photos :(
