SOrry if this was mentioned didn't read all the posts.....

Unfortunately it is a virus. Your McAfee is not popping up it is virus. There are a few good free sites that can get rid of this: try malwarebytes.org it is very good at getting all the spyware garbage. You might have to let that run a few times to get it all cleaned because sometimes the virus hides under other viruses. Make sure you do the update first.
Also if the virus is nasty enough to not allow it to do downloads try booting to safe mode (on dells usually F8 while booting up will bring up the safe mode boot option).

As for McAfee by default it uses 100% of your processing (total crap) while scanning that is configurable in the scanning settings.

Also another way to recover if you didn't install any new software since the virus use the system recover -> Start->programs->accessories->system tools->system recovery. It will set your windows back to the last save configuration and usually get it in a stable enough state to clean it. WARNING: if you do this you will lose any installed programs since that recovery point. But data files will stay.

Sorry, I just read other posts, for putting out the same info. Anyway like one stated if you could create another profile, login as that profile and run the cleaning software. Also it might be wise to delete the files in your temp directory. Some won't delete (in use) but best to do this as the other user, here is the folder: c:\documents and settings\<your username>\local settings\temp (the local settings folder might be hidden) or if in as your user click on start->run and type in %temp%.

I have a Dell Inspiron, runs on Vista. I have a version of McAfee that we ordered with the computer when I got it. I'm on some other forum, but they're speaking a language so above my head...ugh.

Well there's your problem.

Kidding...it probably is really a virus/malware issue.

For a free virus software (I agree with ditching McAfee), you could also try Microsoft Security Essentials. I used it for a while on an old PC and was pretty happy with the limited effect on system performance compared to McAfee or Norton.

Well, because my options are limited as far as money goes, I have access to free Norton protection through Comcast, so I uninstalled McAfee and replaced with Norton. It's scanning, and I backed up my files again. It found....well, a lot of stuff it calls 'risks' (178 found 10 fixed), sooo...at this point, I'm just going to let it finish its stuff and go to the malware place to see if it can clean up the mess.
