My comp seems to be rebelling at the worst humanly possible time (the most stressful 2 weeks of my young academic career await me) and my Windows Explorer is acting up. On top of that my McAfee software seems off as well. Every so often the McAfee thing pops up and says I'm not fully protected (because my scheduled scans are turned off...) so I 'fix' that, only to have it change back 2 minutes later. Then, my Windows Explorer freezes and the pop says "Windows Explorer is not responding". I choose 'restart windows explorer" and it comes back, only for a little bit. I'm fine now online, but even my internet seems slowed down. I'm a dolt when it comes to this, and I DONT have time to that it to ITS on campus...I just don't. :(

I've been through that many times. If you can afford it, get another anti-virus program, and also it would be probably good to clean up your registry (registry mechanic).

Wish I could help, but I'm exceptionally bad when it comes to techno-anything.

Is it really the anti-virus software? Gah...I still have nearly a year on my subscription with McAfee. Never had issues with them in the past. :( It won't download the Registry cleaner right now...my computer is too slow. I dunno...I may just close up shop and let it rest a bit.

BTW, McAfee sucks. Is this a fully licensed version or a trial version that came pre-installed?

McAfee, in my experience, does slow down your pc. If you can, I would downgrade to the Enterprise version, less annoying popups and easy on your system's resources. After a while I did a complete uninstall and used Norton Anti-Virus, no problems and my laptop ran much smoother after that.

Try googling your problems, you may come across a few message boards/forums with some answers. What are the specs on your PC?

I have a Dell Inspiron, runs on Vista. I have a version of McAfee that we ordered with the computer when I got it. I'm on some other forum, but they're speaking a language so above my head...ugh.

Everything Windows related keeps freezing up. Seriously. Everything. I tried to open some problem reports thing, and it froze. I try opening up my programs menu, and it freezes up.

Try creating another windows user account and see if that helps.

Well, when have I ever been one to care about "reputation" points. Hee hee.

Seriously, hope you figure it out P66. We've all been there and it's a pain in the ass.

mcafee sucks indeed, use Avast if you can find a free version of it... or the best choice if possible would be to get a Mac :)

The usual for a situation like this is shut down, fire back up and continually press f8 or hold it I believe - then you should get an option to boot up in safe mode with networking. See if you can do anything from there.

If you can get that far, download Malwarebytes, and scan - maybe that can pick up the virus.

I was going to recommend downloading malwarebytes as well. One of the best programs out there for removing viruses.
