He was granted the exemption, but now there's a problem with his visa and is currently not being allowed to enter the country. The president of Serbia has weighed in.,..

I mean, if he's vaccinated, there's no issue. That said, to tell a guy that he's got a medical exemption and have him fly 24 hours from Europe to Melbourne to then inform him that his paperwork is not in order is bush league.

My understanding is the tournament gave him the exemption.

Not the government. It's up to the government to decide who can come into the country.

Statement from Aussie PM said his “Visa was cancelled”. If they issued a Visa that would have come from the government.

Whether he bullshitted to get that visa is a different story.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews then clarified the border process.

“While the Victorian government and Tennis Australia may permit a non-vaccinated player to compete in the Australian Open, it is the Commonwealth government that will enforce our requirements at the Australian border,” Andrews said. “If an arriving individual is not vaccinated, they must provide acceptable proof that they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons to be able to access the same travel arrangement as fully vaccinated travelers.”
