Its kinda boring around here, so why the hell not. Ive always been curious about this, so shit why not ask.. In sports now a days it always seems to be an enfeses (yea that spelling is way off) on size... Like when you draft a youngen and people are like yea he needs to add more muscle, size etc... even like with Vlasics latest staements on what he wants to add or pack on. My question is, when or if does adding the muscle/size hinder the production? Do you believe is does, or do you always think bulking up will always make a good player better?... Its somethng ive always been curious about. Why? Mostly because im a pretty small shrimp. Ive posted how i made it to the "E" before but didnt get anywhere, but im also a goalie, and IMO Ive always felt that, yes Im pretty small by atheletic comparisons, but I dont think I wouldve got as far as I did if I had packed it on. Ive always felt that although tiny, if I bulked up ( which is ahrd for me to do anyway) it would hinder my reflex speed & movement. Do you agree or disagree with this? Because I dont agree that bigger = better... And I have neved liked that being thown onto players, because honestly, in any sport the smaller natural built atheletes are always the top ones... So why does every sport want everyone to get bigger?

Jus curious, since, im bored, and of course drunk lol...

Truth is, in hockey, Im not sure size does matter much. Look at the greatest players in the game and you'll see many are under 6' and under 200lb. Sid the kid, stamkos, kane, karlsson is listed at 175, whitney. There arent any studs under around 5'10'', so obviously size does matter a bit.

I think scouts over emphasize size over skill sometimes. We'll see if toivonen beats hertl, but it was clearly size not skill that seems the determining factor there. Same with coyle over etem in 2010, etc. Id rather be a small and fast team than big and slow, particularly in the current NHL where speed kills and big slow players just take a penalties.

Can you imagine a player with the size of Patrick Willis and the speed of Marleau? He would destroy somebody on the ice.

But I think the perfect size for a player at forward is 5'10 - 6'1. If he has speed then that's what scouts focus on.

D-men I think 6'3 or taller with around 200lb, that can skate.

St. Louis is listed at something like 5'8", I'd probably label him as a stud. David Desharnias, Tyler Ennis, and Brian Gionta are all smaller players who are very good as well.

Hertl was picked over Toivanen because San Jose's scouts believe he has elite level hockey sence in all three zones both with and without the puck. Size was a partial factor but not the main one in this instance.

As far as size goes, if we are talking about muscle bulk, IMO it begins to become a negitive when it starts to have adverse effects on ones flexability.

I think it can also cause a negatvie affect on ones stamina by getting too ripped. Ive also aways had a theory that the excessive working out that athletes do now a days is the reason for so many more injuries now a days. People say the injuries in contact spots are because the athletes are bigger n stronger, but I think the injuries arent because of the contact with bigger stronger guys its cause the workouts overtime completely destroy there bodys n cause them to get injuried more...

The main reason I brought this up though was Ive been thinkin bout tryin to add about 15-20lbs of muscle. But would the more muscle would make my reflexes faster because the equiptment would in a sence be lighter to move around, or would the added weight actually make them slower?

Lot of factors to consider. How old are you? Trying to add 15-20 lbs of muscle is a HUGE goal. It took me years to do that. I was in my early 30's at the time. The older you get, the tougher it is. People just don't make those type of gains over a summer, unless you are doing in the Barry Bonds way. LOL.
As far as the injuries go, I think there are more of them now as well. Especially ligament and tendon tears. Bigger muscles possibly help leading to more tears than years before.
You can definitely put on muscle and still be able to keep your speed and reflexes, but you would need to train properly. Can't just get in there and hit the weights and lift heavy all the time. You still need to work on cardio, running drills, etc....

haha Im thinking I might have to go the Barry Bonds way jus to start to gain, cause it seems doing the 6 meal a day thing, with 3 eating, 3 shakes doesnt gain me ANYTHING. Jus makes me take more dumps lol... BTW Im 32, lazy, eat everything in site, drink alot, cut like a skinny black guy and have never been able to gain weight worth SHIT haha I thought once I hit 30 id finally start packin it on, even beer gut, but nope... I also smoke like 1 1/2 packs a day and have better stamina then most of my friends that dont smoke... Im starting to think Im some kind of Xmen! haha

as a Marlins fan I loathed the day when Hanley Ramirez decided to add more muscle during the offseason a couple years back to hit more HR's since he was moved from leadoff to the 3 hole....guess what...he's NEVER been the same since and has largely took a steaming shit over the last two seasons.....I remember Ryan Dempster back in the day for the Fish too....dude bulked up and it screwed his entire pitching mechanics up and he was awful.....gotta remember that you can add extra muscle but your ligaments, etc. that attach all that good stuff really don't change much (if i remember correctly) and that's why a lot of ripped guys will get injured seemingly that much easier.
