I've been saying this all along, Dre Kirkpatrick is not going to be the player we're expecting him to be as he does not have the speed to play corner. Kashif Moore gave him the business during the rookie mini camp. I guarantee he'll be a safety in two years.

It's OTAs and we're already making sweeping generalizations about a guy's career? Really?

I made the same statement prior to the draft. So.... yeah I am.

I heard a lot of the same complaints about Leon Hall after he was abused by Ted Ginn Jr. and Dwayne Jerret in college. We'll see.

CB's covering these "new" breeds of TE's is always going to be a mis-match. The article said he had great positioning...it was just a great throw and catch. That is going to happen.

One of the biggest things defenses have not been able to do is get guys on defense that are as big as the WR/TE they are covering. You see these WR's coming in at 6'4" and these TE's coming in at 6'5" and running 4.4 40's....yet, on defense you get 5'11" corners, and 6'2" safeties trying to match up. Even if they are fast enough to stay with them, the hight and size disadvantage is always going to play a role. Until these defenses can convince some of these bigger faster players to play CB/Safety, etc...instead of WR...this is going to continue.

Not the Bengals. We have Taylor Mays (huge), Robert "Catches Hard" Sands, and the new kid from Boise. Collectively, they are likely the biggest group of safeties in the league..... It might help if they could actually play.

Granted, but that point still stands.

Krikpatrick is 5'11"? Anytime he's matched up against these new breed of WR/TE he's going to be at a huge disadvantage.

The defense will only be able to do so much until they find themselves some CB's that are 6'2" or 6'3" and instead of playing WR, they play CB. Right now, if you are 6'2" or 6'3" and can run like the wind...you're a WR. Eventually, someone has to catch on and start putting some of these guys on defense to slow down the passing game.

*Being able to actually play would be a prerequisit, I do believe...LOL

You k ow Kirkpatrick is 6'1 to 6'4 depending on which measurement you believe. He def isn't 5'11.

I stand corrected on his height. Listed at 6'1 and 5/8.

So, he may have been in better position than I originally thought:

However, my overall thought still stands...most CB's today are not matched up with the WR's in terms of speed/ability/height. Not yet, anyway.

Same with Safeties and LB's....imagine if you had a Hernandez or a Gronkowskie type athlete on defense at LB...you'd have exactly what they are on offense....game changers. Problem is..when you are that big and that fast...the money is on the offensive side of the ball, or the schemes push the player to that side because of how lopsided it makes the offense vs the defense in terms of total playmakers.

Eventually, things will catch up....they always do.

In the meantime we need to get us as many of these WR/TE hybrids as we can, as they appear to be a serious matchup problem for all defenses.......

Well I didn't make that argument so that analogy doesn't really apply as a rebuttal to my statement.

Agreed. Right now, if you can line up AJ, Sanu, Binns, Gresham, Charles in a 5 wide set...you've got a mis-match somewhere...as all of those guys are in that category...Binns, Sanu, and Green are all bigger than your average CB and bigger than a lot of Safeties. Of course Gresham and Charles are faster than almost any LB and bigger than any CB/S that would cover them....

It is a problem for defenses, because you can only scheme so much.

This is why there is such a premium on pass-rushers. It's the only real way defenses have to counter this at the current time.

I mean, let's face it....if you are 6'4" and a freak of an athlete that can run a 4.3 40 or 4.4 40 and can jump up and go get it....you're playing WR...not CB. Same for a TE...if you are 6'4-6'6", 250 - 260 and run a 4.5 or 4.6...and can catch...you're playing a hybrid TE now...not LB or DE.

When defenses are able to start getting some of these freak TE's to play LB instead and some of these freak WR's to play CB instead....things will really be interesting...however, until that point comes, the best way to minimize the mis-matches is to get to the QB before he can get the ball to his target.
