The Broncos have a month to exercise the option on the contract - or renegotiate the contract - or go in another direction. From my point of view - the best option is likely a renegotiated contract - involving a smaller salary cap hit - and incentives. VJ threw him some praise after viewing the film.

If the Broncos keep Okung - it will be a symbol that they think the talent on the oline was good, but not played to their strengths.

I saw Okung get dropped on his arse - a couple of times last season and I can't get it out of my mind. I know he had some good moments too - he wasn't horrible by any means. I hope that these coaches can maybe get the most out of him.

Based on what is out there, a renegotiated contract is what I hope happens. First time ever he played 16 games.

In my opinion RT was a much bigger issue then left.

Have to wonder if Talib's ripping him in the locker room will be a detriment to him wanting to be back.

I think that both offense and defense were frustrate last year. I think both understand.

Yeah I'm on the train of keeping him. While he definitely did not have the best year all it takes for me to want to keep him is looking at the market in both the draft and FA this year. Not a whole lot to replace him that would be an upgrade. Hopefully they can get it restructured but even if they can't we have a lot of cap space and can handle the cap hit.

You are exactly correct - Carl - the only LT who had a better year than Okung from last year - available in FA this year is 35 years old.

A shotgun offense and better running game has a tendency to prevent said turf booty divots.

Your DP, from high atop his throne, looks down upon all the peasants and rates this thread...

Thumbs up.

I'll take the 5-6 mil and let his butt hit the road.

If we could land Joe Thomas then let him go, otherwise we have zero better options at arguably the most important position on the line

Per Sport Rac if we pick up his option due 3/9 then it is 2 years as it guarantees his 2017 and 2018 salary. He is at 11.7 in 2017 and 11.2 in 2018. The final 2 years of his deal are 12+ million each. Here is the link:

  1. I think keep Okung. Restructure if we can… make it happen Elway. If not, seriously keep him. At least with the market as it is right now (waiting to see cuts).
  2. Sign Whitworth or Wagner to man RT. Whoever will be cheaper wins the job imo. Something like $7 to 8 million a year (2 years for Whitworth. 4 years for Wagner).
  3. Sign a second tier NT like Bennie Logan who will play 40ish % of snaps. Something like $14 million, $9 guaranteed over 3 years.
  4. Go after Calais Campbell. 4 years $44 million, $30 guaranteed. Hopefully he takes small discount to come play the last of his good years by coming home to Denver and making our great defense elite again. He can play 5 tech in base situations and play 1 tech in sub packages. Essentially he can play the ‘heavy’ dlineman when we are in nickel.
  5. Sign Woodhead to 2 year $4.25 million $2.5 guaranteed deal.
  6. If we still have some cash left, go after a guard or ILB. Maybe a Warmack or Fluker at guard or Minter or Alonso at ILB… need to see how market sorts out and who is cut.

He has been on a downhill path for a the last few years. While I wouldn't mind him I just don't know how much he has left in the tank.

Who are you replacing him with though? Have you looked at the FA pool this year? As much as Okung struggled last year there really is only one person hitting the market possibly that played better in Whitworth. I'm reading that the Bengals are trying to get him re-signed so even he might not make it to the market. So you cut Okung and save some money but we could see even worse production from the LT position.

I reserve the right to second guess myself. :) after looking at the potential tackles ( actually all O line positions ) that should hit the FA market, it's very depressing to say the least. Good article yesterday from Legwold/bleached report on the changes likely to happen this year regarding O line and how they plan on mixing the straight line blocking with some zone blocking. Kind of a hybrid I take it. That could certainly help Okung and the others a good deal. Good article. Anyone who hasn't read it, worth a look.
