What's sad is that the dude is going to finally fulfill his potential and then become a FA.

He had a really good year last year. I think I read somehwere from the guy who does the AFCN coverage for ESPN, that he only gave up 2 sacks last year.

I know! Right after we declined his extension he started to perform.

I think they'll keep him. Remember they have to spend the $$$ and they are a ton under the cap. Plus, they have invested in their tackles before (i.e. willie, Levi then Whitworth). I'm expecting big things out of Precious this year. I think he'll be one of the better RT's in the game.

I would think that Smith would move on, rather than stay here. That would explain some of his behavior.

I'd feel better if we just extended him now. We've had better luck locking guys up before they reach FA.

I can understand why they have taken the approach that they have with Smith, though. It seems like he's putting it all together now but I think he's a guy that (if you're paying him a ton of dough) you want to be as confident as you can that he's devloped some sort of work ethic and won't just eat himself out of the league when he get's paid. Plus, he's had some lingering injuries in the past. I think the wait and see approach makes sense. Then, at the end of the season, if he proves he's worth the investment pay him. They could also extend him during the season if things are going well and they've reached the point where they're totally confident in him.

Hard to really blame the Bengals for not extending him/picking up his option last year. Going into the year, the guy had been nothing short of a "bust". Based on the previous years and the outcome(s), there's probably not a team in the league that would have picked up his option and risk having to severly overpay him after watching him do what he did the first few years here.

Kudos for Smith for making up the ground, and proving everyone wrong. Now, he's got to go out and do it again this year if he wants to get "paid".

We had already severely overpaid him given his red flags coming out of college..... We went all in on his potential. Strange that we would do it once (when the investment was very high) and not a second time (when it wouldn't have cost as much and he could have been cut anyway). It's not like we were going to be against the cap by picking up the extension or having to cut him if he wasn't able to perform. Now we either have to rush a deal, compete in FA, or use the franchise tag....... To the best of my knowledge the tag does not differentiate between left and right tackles. If we want to keep Smith, we'll end up owing him top 5 LEFT TACKLE money.

I highly doubt they would tag him.

Also, that's next year. I'll worry about that then. Let's see if he can duplicate last years' success first.

I think part of not giving him the extension was to give him the kick in the ass that he needed to get his fat ass in shape and start performing. If they would've extended him at that time they'd be rewarding him for being an overpaid non-contributor. So maybe not getting the extension when it wasnt warranted provided a much needed wake up call for Smith. When it's all said and done I think he remains with the Bengals and will this time at least have earned his money.

To be fair, the first year he was fat.

The second year he broke his foot (actually 2nd time, I think his fatness caused the 1st broken foot in year one) and got back, but was way behind.

Last year, he came in two years in a row in good shape, though best shape of NFL career at that point, and showed what he can do.

Smith, I think, is a good dude and a heck of a lineman who got some really, really, really crappy advice after leaving college. Weight was always a concern, but I think (hopefully) he's past that at this point having shown up 3 years in a row now in shape.
