So listening to sports talk here and the brought up something interesting...maybe Ohtani signs like a 1 year $45 million deal to DH and learn left field, where he can try out some place not Dodgers, no long term commitment while he rests his arm. Then in a year he can still go to the Dodgers or wherever or stay put if he likes it then sign a long term deal.

This works for both parties, the 1 year team isn't committing $400 mil they get a 1 year show me opportunity and shot in the arm for marketing. Maybe the Mets, maybe Yankees, Giants, hell the Rangers, Cubs, etc.

Tell me this isn't a huge possibility

It is an idea.

But what do the Giants have to entice him to stay? A safe city? A winning org? A FO with a tradition of winning? Numerous stars surrounding him in the clubhouse?

Buster Posey just moved back to the Bay Area. Maybe he unrestored to finally man the hot corne?

No idea if that works for Ohtani. But he’d have to be DH only right? Do we want him in LF not knowing if his arm is going to fall off on a sac fly?

Not sure how that works, can he not throw or just not pitch?

No idea, but if I’m Ohtani and I have $600M riding on the line, I don’t want to risk it. Then second thing, unless the Giants way overpay, what better way to get money then a guaranteed (or as much as possible) ticket to the playoffs and a potential WS? Why would he pick the Giants?

Don’t get me wrong, I hope he comes here, but it’ll have to be long term imho.

I don't think that is a possibility at all. Not impossible but not very probable at least. First, he doesn't need to sign a one year, prove it deal. Second, even though he can start swinging a bat at the end of February, he cannot throw for much longer. Remember Bryce Harper's quick return from TJ surgery? He DH'd for a while and then played 1st base. He couldn't do outfield throws. Now Ohtani is rumored to have had internal brace surgery, which isn't as long a recovery as TJ surgery but it is very similar. Ohtani is a DH only for most of 2024 and does not need to just sign a one year deal. Plenty of teams are going to offer massive contracts.

Why would he sign that deal when someone will give him $500M?

Isn't that in doubt now with the injury?
I haven't heard anything to suggest that. His bat alone will net him a lot of money. Of course, if he doesn't get want he wants by next February, maybe he goes one year. I don't think that will happen.

That’s a pipe dream that we hope we are part of. But some team will offer him a $500 million contract hoping he will come back and pitch again. Major gamble the Giants should not take. The one year deal would work in our favor but he has no reason to consider it.
