Fucking Tolbert signed a 4 year deal with the Panthers. WTF, they have a ton of RBs. Michael Bush is still out there and Seattle is showing interest.

I wonder if this means they're going to trade Stewart...

The market for Jonathan Stewart
11:52 AM ET
Jonathan Stewart | Panthers

Even when the Carolina Panthers were just interested in free agent RB Mike Tolbert, there was speculation that if he was signed, either DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart could be traded; with a more reasonable contract, Stewart was seen as the more likely of the two to be attractive to other NFL teams. Now that Tolbert has officially signed on with Carolina, that speculation will only increase.

We have to stress that there's been no indications yet that Stewart is on the block, nor that the Panthers are interested in making a move with any of their RBs. It's possible that Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski has some new tricks up his sleeve involving all three RBs and Cam Newton. But there are a number of teams out there that could use a Jonathan Stewart in the backfield looking ahead to the fall, we can't rule out a trade if the Panthers' hypothetical asking price isn't too high.

Three of the four teams in the AFC North fall into this category -- the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns lost Peyton Hillis to free agency, and were linked briefly (and erroneously) to Ben Tate last week. The Bengals are looking for a replacement for Cedric Benson, and are meeting with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Michael Bush this week. As for Pittsburgh, Rashard Mendenhall is coming off a torn ACL and the team is not counting on him to be available to start 2012. In fact, the Steelers were reportedly in the mix for Tolbert at one point. Trading a draft pick for an RB doesn't seem like the Steeler Way, but again, we can't rule it out yet.

Elsewhere, the Detroit Lions (with the uncertainty of Mikel Leshoure and Jahvid Best), New York Jets (who need someone to pair with Shonn Greene) and Philadelphia Eagles (whose power-back experiment with Ronnie Brown went awry, but could still use such a player in tandem with LeSean McCoy) also make some logical sense.

Just to reiterate, it's not immediately evident that Stewart is even on the block, nor that the Panthers are willing to part with him for reasonable compensation in return. But it would also not be a shock for something to develop on this front in the coming weeks.

I would give up a 3rd for Stewart if my team needed a back.

He's a got the size and skills to be a feature back in the NFL.

Carolina is not smart managing their running backs. (1) they drafted two RBs with 2 first round picks (2) then they gave Williams a massive contract when they still had Stewart under contract (3) now they sign Tolbert?

Assuming Smith signs in SF we should still have a bit of cap room to improve RG and KR

Kamerion Wimbley - LB - Raiders

Free agent OLB Kamerion Wimbley will visit the Titans on Monday.
The Titans were expected to make a push for Mario Williams before getting bogged down in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, but signing Wimbley would be the next best thing. Wimbley hasn't generated any public interest since his Friday release, but has almost certainly been generating significant interest behind the scenes. He's the top remaining free agent with Manning off the board.

I'm absolutely shocked by the Tolbert signing. The word was he was looking for a starting job. And what are the Panther's thinking?! You trade Stewart, obviously, but I'd rather have Stewart than Tolbert.

Jonathan Stewart - RB - Panthers

"Multiple team sources" tell the Charlotte Observer that Jonathan Stewart is "unlikely" to be traded despite the Panthers' addition of Mike Tolbert.
The Panthers will face a tough decision when Stewart enters 2013 free agency, but for now they're poised to keep him along with DeAngelo Williams and Tolbert. Tolbert will likely shoulder some of the load on passing downs, and cover kicks on special teams. Stewart and Williams will be the primary backs. The Panthers could consider cutting Williams and re-signing Stewart next offseason, although releasing DeAngelo would cause a roughly $5 million cap hit in 2013.

FWIW: The agent for QB David Garrard reached out to the #49ers late last week, before news broke of team's interest in Peyton Manning. SF said it "felt comfortable" at the QB position. The Niners are one of the teams at the top of Garrard's wish list.

Alex Smith - QB - 49ers CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco expects the 49ers to work quickly to re-sign free agent Alex Smith following Peyton Manning's decision to sign with the Broncos.
San Francisco is still widely believed to be Smith's top choice, and he's been reported to have a standing offer of three years and $24 million. That would be more than generous for a seven-year veteran who just cracked the 3,000-yards passing barrier for the first time in 2011.
