ah.. so the offer sheet is actually like submitting a contract to the player, not something that's sent to the team

so what happens if a player decides not to sign any offer sheets.. or sign any offer from the current team.. then you have the rare hockey hold-out? i can see why they're rare, that situation would basically be a player demanding to play for a team that holds his rights, but not budging on salary

you think he could get a better return than 4 first rounders?

i respect that opinion, but i don't think that he could

here's a semi-related question also, if multiple teams offer-sheet him, does he get a choice of which is the 'primary offer sheet'?

i'm guessing he doesn't if multiple teams make different offers (example is for simplicity).. say..

philly offers 2 years 15 mil
nyr offers 7 years 63 mil
toronto offers 10 years 150 mil

i'm assuming toronto is the offer that needs to be matched?

but what if they offer identical contracts? does stamkos get the choice if yzerman elects for the compensation, or does yzerman get the choice?

it would be a completely different story if edmonton wanted to offer-sheet him or if the red wings did.. 4 first round picks in the high 20's might be worth matching, whereas 4 lottery picks might not be

basically what i'm getting at, is can yzerman say he would match a 4 year 40 million offsheet from detroit, forcing stamkos to edmonton, even though they are the same contract?

Offer sheets are contracts that are presented to an unsigned RFA which he can either reject, or sign and accept. A player can only be signed under one contract at a time.

This being said. Before the NHL will approve an offer sheet, contract, that a player has agreed to and signed, the RFA's home team is given the choice to either match the contract to a "T" or let the player walk with compensation according to the CBA.

This means, that if 2 or more teams tender an offer sheet to a player, say Stamkos, and he doesn't like any of them, he doesn't have to sign them, and he can continue negotiations with his parent team, or the player can choose which contract he likes the best, and sign that one, giving his parent team the choice of whether to match it or let him go for draft compensation.
