I mean, I know that guys want to take anything they hear and make it bigger than it is. I imagine it was something like this:

"Hey Homer! How's building the roster going?"
"Pretty good Mr. (Philly Sports Writer). Just shuffling some things around and seeing what our best options are."
"Those playoffs were good, eh?"
"Yeah, I'll tell ya Stamkos looked real good in the Conference Finals. *continues to talk about other players who played well"
**Sports writer completely checks out of conversation and begins to think of how to word his Stamkos to Philly rumor**

It's not that farfetched. Didn't you hear some teams are going to be signing their respective super heroes in the 2012-2013 season?

Also, this may turn you away from Stammer:
for those thinking Stamkos could get an offer sheet, anything north of $7.9M would cost the offering team FOUR (4) FIRST ROUND PICKS

Stevie is said to be offering around 7 mil. A team will have to blow them out of the water to match it. I am thinking 8.5 but that may get matched. 9 mil is the most I think we would offer IF we can move versteeg and maybe Carle.

Length, I think would be for a long long time. I can see a 10 year offer sheet. Whatever it is, it will have to be crazy.

10 years at an average if 9 mil per year is the only I dont think will get matched.

Something to keep in mind, in terms of years offered in the offersheet, is the cap hits for offersheets are based on a 5 year max. Any years on offersheets that exceed the 5th year increase it's annual cap hit.

The picks don't scare me now that we have schenn, voracek, couturier, and wellwood and a fews other OK guys in the farm. It's all about the money.

There is 1 thing we do have on our side here:

Eklund has not said much regarding the issue. He only mentioned Erik Cole as a possibility for us. So we all know that mean Erik Cole will not be a Flyers next season.

4....is a LOT of picks. Regardless, it's not going to happen.

its interesting to note that all teams currently "own" their own 1st rounders for the 2012 draft

maybe this means we see more offer sheets July 1???

Can you provide a link to this particular part of the CBA. I am unfamiliar with it.
Thanks

Sorry, I missworded what I was trying to say with that statement. What it should have read was annual cap hit to determine the compensation amount.

Article 10.4 states:

The number and quality of draft choices due the Prior Club shall be based on the average annual value of the compensation contained in the Principal Terms of the New Club's Offer Sheet (Determined by dividing such compensation by the lesser number of years of the Offer Sheet or five)...

So if the contract is worth 90 million over 9 years, you take 90/5years to get the cap hit which would then go into the picks returned?

i really don't think the stamkos stuff is that far-fetched.. obviously he's a great talent, but if a team was looking to rebuild, letting a star go for 4 first round picks would be the way to do it

now i dont know if the bolts are looking to rebuild, considering they already kinda did and stamkos was the centerpiece of that.. and they did go to the conference finals this year.. but the flyers did just trade away their young guys, for younger guys..

IMO 4 first round picks for stamkos is a pretty good deal for both sides..maybe even a little lopsided for the bolts

i dont think the flyers have the money to sign him, and i kind of dont want them too ($$$).. but if they did i would hope they would trade for his rights, and not try to offersheet him

as i continuously edit my post, i'm realizing the genius of what stevie is doing.. if he keeps stamkos in discussions at least, but doesn't come to an agreeable number, he can say that he didn't trade stamkos, and wasn't looking around at the offers for him.. problem for stamkos and other teams is i'm not sure they'd be willing to part with 4 1st rounders, and if that's the case, the offer sheets will come in under that 4 pick threshold (whatever that might be) and tampa will then match that, signing for stamkos for less than he wanted.

or some team will go over that 4 pick threshold and then he'll have a decision to make, 4 picks or stamkos at a high rate

The thing is, trading for his rights would have to include some of those first rounders and even more.

That's a bit of an extreme example but, yes, the basic premise is correct. I was trying to point out that the Flyers couldn't avoid giving up four 1st rounders by offering an obscene amount of years.

you think he could get a better return than 4 first rounders?

i respect that opinion, but i don't think that he could

here's a semi-related question also, if multiple teams offer-sheet him, does he get a choice of which is the 'primary offer sheet'?

i'm guessing he doesn't if multiple teams make different offers (example is for simplicity).. say..

philly offers 2 years 15 mil
nyr offers 7 years 63 mil
toronto offers 10 years 150 mil

i'm assuming toronto is the offer that needs to be matched?

but what if they offer identical contracts? does stamkos get the choice if yzerman elects for the compensation, or does yzerman get the choice?

it would be a completely different story if edmonton wanted to offer-sheet him or if the red wings did.. 4 first round picks in the high 20's might be worth matching, whereas 4 lottery picks might not be

basically what i'm getting at, is can yzerman say he would match a 4 year 40 million offsheet from detroit, forcing stamkos to edmonton, even though they are the same contract?

Are you allowed to sign more than one offer sheet? Pretty sure the player chooses the offer he likes the most.

An offer sheet is considered a binding contract so a player can only sign one.
