For our next installment of the Off Season.

Does NE trade Jimmy G before the draft? If so to who? What is the minimum you'd take for him?

Nah, I think next yr. It would be the year before he hits FA. Think about it, teams will want to bring him in and sign him before he gets to pick his own team. That is when the market for him might be the highest. Teams might be forced to give up more knowing they may not have a shot at all if he hits the FA market.

LOL. That would be now. You can't trade him after next season. He'll be a FA.

Exactly. His stock is the highest right now. If NE doesn't trade him this year he's gone. Unless TB retires. No way they tag him and pay TB. No way he signs with NE who wouldn't be able to match other offers.

I think he gets traded. I'm thinking Cleveland's # 12 overall. Or their first in the 2nd this year along with a 5th plus their 2nd or 3rd next year.

Cleveland is known for panicking. Chicago may be the best thing for us. They can drive up the price.

Chicago would be my 2nd guess followed by SF.

I love this time of year.

It depends what we can get for him. 1 and a 4 or a couple of high 2's. At worst he hangs around for another just in case Brady's arm falls off or something. Just don't give him away ala Collins.

I'll trade him to Chicago for Alshon Jeffery...as long as we can sign him long term.

Browns and Bears are the two main players right now. The Texans are also looking at JG.

Rumors are flying everywhere. Supposedly the Browns are intending to offer #12 and #51. That's a first and a second rounder in this year's draft. The Bears are looking to offer #3 and a 4th Round pick. The 49ers jumped in this week and they have #2.

Cleveland is a mess. They cut McCowen this week and their other QB. That's an indication that they will trade for JG or draft Watson. Cleveland fans do NOT want Watson. Another rookie that could be a Ryan Leaf or Johnny Manzeil. JG has shown he doesn't panic and beat the Cardinals and was on his way to beating the Dolphins when he got hurt. He just might have beaten the Bills if he hadn't separated his shoulder.

The Bears are ready to move on from Cutler and their closer to moving up in the standings and they really don't want a rookie. Once Cleveland's offer is known, they may come with #3 and a couple of players that BB may ask for.

The 49ers are whacked. They may be crazy enough to pull a Dolphins/Saints deal and upchuck their entire draft to get JG. Their new head coach still hasn't gotten the brown out of his BVDs after Super Bowl LI and would probably love to have a little NEP offense on his side.

If they hold onto him they lose him for nothing. UNLESS a mid or late season trade happens to replace a starter who got injured.

I take the best deal and make the trade now. Jacoby looked like he could hanldle it if need be. Give him the reps as the O line would need to work on a different blocking scheme for Jacoby B.

Then draft another pocket passer and hope to find gold again.

Love Jeffery but I think he's a FA? No way I would make this a treade. NE is strong at WR. There are a lot of quality WRs in the draft. NE has other needs like LB, DB and OL/DL. Maybe a RB depending on what happens with LG.

Thanks for providing what you're hearing back there. That sounds like it's just strengthening the case that BB should be able tk get excellent value for JG.

I like the Cleveland offer. I'd be happy with that. BB will trade one or both for more picks. McGowen also was quoted as saying JG could possibly carry an organization.

I see the rich getting richer:suds:

I kinda agree. Just get something good. If you hold on to him it shows you don't a crap trade

I think Jimmy G wants to play at this point and Brady has at 2-3 years.

The Patriots will enter the 2017 offseason with a ton of cap space ($61,248,593 according to our own salary cap guru in Miguel @patscap) but have a lot of players hitting free agency. There is a total of 19 players that are free agents this spring. It begins with 13 unrestricted free agents, three restricted free agents, and three exclusive-rights free agents.

Here is a list of the Patriots free agents and their ages in parenthesis:

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS:
TE Martellus Bennett (30)
RB LeGarrette Blount (30)
RB Brandon Bolden (27)
DT Alan Branch (32)
FB James Develin (28)
WR Michael Floyd (27)
FS Duron Harmon (26)
LB Dont’a Hightower (26)
DE Chris Long (31)
LB Barkevious Mingo (26)
CB Logan Ryan (26)
TE Greg Scruggs (26)
DE Jabaal Sheard (27)

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS:
CB Malcolm Butler (26)
OT Cameron Fleming (24)
LB Trevor Reilly (29)

EXCLUSIVE-RIGHTS FREE AGENTS:
CB Justin Coleman (23)
LB Brandon King (23)
TE Matt Lengel (26)

So, what are the differences in the categories you ask? Well, I’m glad you did… sort of. The Patriots can extend any of the players below to a new deal prior to the March 9th deadline. Once the deadline hits, then that is when the different categories come into play.

The Unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any team for basically the best deal for the player, whether it be the money, the team or any other reason.

Restricted free agents can be offered one of three “tenders” by the team holding their rights. They are for players with just three years of accrued service in the league. Since most rookie contracts run for four years now, they are becoming rarer.

A tender is a one-year contract for a pre-determined amount and here are the categories: (note the amounts listed here are in 2016 money and will be subject to change.)

First round tender: 1 year, about $3.582 million
Second round tender: 1 year, about $2.516 million
Right of first refusal/Original round tender: 1 year, about $1.647 million

The original round tender means that if another team swoops in and signs a player, his last team would get a draft pick from the round that player was drafted in. In the case of a UDFA, the team would get nothing.

The team has the right of first refusal as well if a team were to offer a restricted free agent an offer, the Patriots have the right to match it.

Exclusive rights free agents haven’t accrued three years of NFL service and if the team extends them an offer sheet, they have to sign it.

So while the Patriots have tons of cap room, they also have some big decisions to make in regards to 21 free agents. The ERFAs are the most easily done if they want to keep them they are the easiest to retain. But from there the questions become a bit stickier.

We’ll be looking at some of the free agents in depth in the upcoming days. Who may stay and who may go.

Couple of high 2's might be better than the cap of a #1. Two #1's would be a lot of money to keep unless they are going to be instant starters.
Two #1's would be fun to go into the draft with but who would you bump as a starter? Is there a Hightower quality LB out there? Shutdown corner would be gone in 3 years.....

Why would a shut down corner be gone in three years? First round picks are signed for 4 years with a team option for a 5th.

One mock I saw on NFLN had us drafting Jabrill Peppers from Michigan at 32. I don't know how he would last that long. I'd love it tho.

Two #1s cost isn't an issue until they come to their 2nd contract. The rookie pool/CBA took care of that. Even if NE kept say a #4 and their 32 it's probably in the neighborhood of $5-6 mil. Chances are BB trades one of them any way.
As for who'd get replaced? Who knows NE has 19 FAs. Chances are HT and or Bennett don't return. I think Butler gets a contract done soon. BB could franchise HT or MB but that's probably a bigger tag than BB is comfortable with. NE also has about $65m in cap this year. So they're in good shape no matter what way they want to go either resigning players, FAs and or draft and trades.

Lots of quality LB/DEs as well as DBs in the draft as well as RB. OL/QB are the weak spots.

BB would never, even on his worst day use a draft pick in the top 10 unless there was a can't miss, 100% beast defensive lineman available. And he'd have to be a certified Reggie White clone.

That being said, Bill would trade the pick for another 1st rounder plus another pick or two. If the pick he traded for was in the top 12 he'd trade that pick for more and possibly trade the third 1st rounder he'd get unless it was next year. He's turn in any of the top picks this year into at 4 more picks anywhere between the 2nd and 4th by trading for a 1st round plus every time.

I suspect that the Patriots will lose HT, Ryan, Butler and probably 3 or 4 more. Bill will get replacements in FA and at least 2 starters in this draft. I predict the defense will actually be better.

I could see Butler getting tagged if they don't work out a deal. The tag should drop considering no way is Revis getting $15 mil this year.
I hope you're right about the D getting better. Looking at them this year no one would've thought they would be the #1 points against D. All those situational players BB picked up during the year was amazing how they came in and just did their job.

How would we lose Butler? He is restricted. No way BB does not tender him a 1st. I mean can NE really walk into next yr draft with 3 first rd picks? IMO, it would be a mistake to let Butler walk. He is young and gets better every year. Just pay the man before it's to late.

Also would not shock me at all to see Harmon more of a priority than Ryan. If you can keep Butler, DMC, Harmon, Rowe, Jones, and draft Peppers..LOL.... around for awhile, that would be great.
