This to me would be a lot better. Still only have the top-53 count against the Cap but at least allow all 53 players to be active on game day if nothing else. I don't get why only 46 can be active.

I don't necessarily think game day rosters need to be increased, that can stay the same. Increasing practice squad is a start, but I'd like them to able to designate a couple more as roster players, eligibile to be elevated to game day and protected from other teams, that PS designation doesn't give.

you can offer any PS player from any team a contract if you want to. So the Jags could offer a contract to 2-8- or 10 Seattle players anytime they'd like to.

Really? I thought that less then certain service time got them an auto pass to the PS, while after a certain amount of service time couldn't go PS.

Either way, your way makes sense, they need to clear waivers only then to be added to PS. Not sure what I was thinking.

This would be a good idea. This would keep teams from IR'ing players that really could actually play in the season but are too afraid of losing to other teams. I have always hated seeing that and a player having to lose a whole year just because they could get scooped up by another team.

I also think they could allow for players to go on the PUP list if they get injured during training camp or the preseason. As it stands now unless you start training camp on the PUP and stay on there you cannot be on the PUP for the season. This again allows teams to let players fully heal while not giving up a roster spot. Inevitably some player will get hurt by the time they can come off PUP so then have an actual starting caliber player make it onto the roster.

These are just a few tweaks that really don't cost the NFL any more money but offers teams more protection for quality players and can get star players to actually stand a chance to not have to miss a full season if they get hurt in the preseason or early on.

Essentially practice squad works to where any team can claim a player off any other team's practice squad. The only thing they have to do is put them on the 53-man roster. You cannot just snatch a guy off practice squad to then put him on your own. So yes this is why the top teams in the league will have some of their players they cut snatched up instead of getting a chance to go on Practice Squad. It is the chance teams take.

I am not sure that is correct.
My understanding is any team can rob a PS player as long as that player is added to their 53 man squad.

Edit: What cd said. Sorry, I responded to this post without reading the rest of the thread.

That would be awesome.

Whats the thinking behind limiting the game day rosters? It's not like the teams can't afford to travel the entire roster? It just seems stupid to limit. I get it in NCAA but not nfl.

I think part of it is to go into the game with your best and healthiest. Let's say Player A has a sprained knee, and is borderline ready to come back. A team is more likely to play him, if they can activate 2 or 3 other players in case he goes down.

Now if Player A is questionable, they have to make a tough decision, let him heal and go on without him or chance bringing him back to soon.

I'd say they do that now essentially, but this forces a more conscious thought process to be put into the decisions.

I think it also plays a role in the bigger picture of things when you start considering PUP, IR, short term IR, complete rosters and payroll. Like how to build that team and decide between keeping 7 good WR's or keeping 6 and letting one go because you only have 1 decent ILB and need to find another one somewhere. Or take a gamble and go with 7 WR's. Except with other numbers on a week to week basis. It forces teams to keep what they "think" is best and the others become available for other teams too in the long run.

But those are just quick guesses. Either way, i'm ok with limiting game rosters because it does force tough decisions. I'd like some sort of veteran exemption for a certain number or an increase of a few roster spots, but then that would probably cut down on league wide competition and the NFL doesn't want any of that.

Limiting the game day roster clearly imposes a constraint on a coaching staffs' decision making. I guess that makes the game "better" to the extent that it rewards good decision making.

I am not sure if you are saying that you don't know why the policy matters or if you don't know what the policy is there for. So apologies in advance if I'm explaining something you already know.

What I heard is the reason for 46 is so that every team will have the same number of (healthy) players available. If you allowed 53 on the roster and one team had four players injured and the other team only had one player injured, the team with only one would have advantage. You can't let go of people on here 53 if you want to keep them.

By limiting it to 46, you have 46 players healthy against 46 healthy. Obviously if you have eight players injured then you can only have 45 active unless you make a roster move. Too bad. Also not all injuries are the same impact wise. So if Denver loses Peyton Manning, it doesn't matter that both teams have 46 players active. Don't know why they chose 46 over 48 or whatever.

46 doesn't really make much sense...if 53 is the roster, imo 53 should be active...I've seen teams lose 3 OL in a game and only had 7 active...had to finish with a TE playing OT...maybe they should've dressed 8 OL, but that shouldn't happen in pro football.

I like this, it allows teams to be able to keep a few more solid role players
