This is no new topic here. We have gone round and round on this a million times over the years. But Byrnes is talking about it today on KNBR and it is raising my temp again.

I have come to terms with the fact that it will not be retired. I am NOT happy about that, but I have accepted the fact.

I don't really have anything new to add, I just want to say again..

It is Whiteside's fault. (Murph, how could you have given it to HIM?!?)

I agree. It makes it worse that only one of those guys was worthy of wearing it (Schmidt) and he only had it for a couple of months.

I noticed that as well.

That actually makes me like Schmidt even more. He got here, wore the number, and realized that the number had a life of it's own and he changed it the next year.

Well done, sir. Well done.

I think the Thrill was an iconic figure for the Giants, he was the glowering face of the franchise. It is beyond me, as so many things are these days, why they do not retire it.

Anyone else need their number retired as a Giant?

Of the current Giants, I think Posey has a chance to have his number retired, and also Lincecum. The pre-2012 Lincecum. :D

2 rings in 3 years is no minor accomplishment. Seeing multiple jerseys from "this team" is not overkill.

Yabu will always be special as he threw the only triple play I've ever seen. One pitch in the inning, 3 outs.

I could swear there was someone else this year that wore it before RK. I was having this conversation at the game the other day and I can't think of who it was. It made me very, very pissy when I saw him in it.

Byrnes ended up listing a whole lot more players who wore the number. This list is FAR from complete.

I think he said that 4 players wore it in '08

hmmm... it's making me crazy because I remember getting pissed about it during a game ("That guy DOES NOT deserve to wear that number!"). He was only up for a game or two. Or maybe it's because I thought RK originally wore 23. Or MAYBE it's because I was pissed that Noonan had a number on his jersey during exhibition games, when he wasn't official.

Who knows. I'm mental when it comes to numbers.

Forgot about him.

Certainly could have been. I don't remember :noidea:

Well, it took me a minute but I found it. YES, it was Gillespie! And I was not happy about it! I should've remembered because my friend & I were having a (somewhat tipsy, so I should get a little break) argument about him at a bar and she's just singing his praises and I'm like- "the kid has GOT to go! I can't back you on this!" and we look up at the tv because we hear his name and he's wearing a Cubbie uniform. I almost peed myself, laughing so hard! :laugh3:
