So, just because we don't attempt 50 yarders, we should simply sign an inferior kicker?

I disagree, I think they are about equal to be honest with you, but Nugent is younger, and has been with the team for a couple years so Mike is being loyal as all things else considered equal here.

Brown got rejected by 31 other teams, and all of a sudden Mike Brown is the idiot for passing on him?

For F sakes, make the madness end on this board.

Overall both are 81% kickers. But from 40-49 Brown hits at a 70% rate and from 50-59 Brown hits from 65%. From 40-49 Nugent hits from 67% and from 50-59 Nugent hits from 40%.

Nugent was also passed over before landing on the Bengals. It happens to a lot of kickers.

The facts are that Brown has had a better career than Nugent and has been much less injury-prone. The advantages of Nugent were that he was a local kid and probably cheaper.

you have to take into account that on most NFL teams, kickers are well established.

that, and the value placed on NFL kickers is kind of warped.
even Green Bay seems happy with Mason Crosby, and he's way worse than either Brown or Nugent

Kickers are mostly psychotic headcases that blow with the wind. Mason Crosby couldn't miss when he first came up with Green Bay, and now he can't be trusted to make a short FG. He'll probably turn it around. Nugent had inconsistency problems with the Jets, and has mostly been pretty good since we signed him. Brown had some great years in Seattle, then struggled at St Louis before kicking very well for us after Nuge got hurt. One miss at a key moment can ruin a guy's confidence for a couple years. The only problem with Nugent has been a tendency to get hurt. Let's just hope Brown is available if Nuge gets hurt again.

Don't care much for kickoff % as most teams now try to bait the other team to return a high kick that lands 2-3 yards into the endzone.

Just watching games, it was obvious Brown got more leg under kicks that were closer to 50 yards. There was always plenty of yards to go. And I haven't looked at the stats, but I believe the only 50+ yarder(s) he missed was further than 55 yards.

He also hasn't missed FGs in the playoffs. Signing Nugent makes no sense.

It should also be noted that when Nugent missed games, he missed them at the end of seasons.... I'm guessing the touchdown % goes down by month in the NFL. Ball travels further when it's 60 degrees than it does when it's 10.
