Although I would agree with you, except that we are now in the post-modern era. In the days of the 40's-70's, the forward pass was an afterthought. A lot of low scoring and close games back then. If you lead by a TD with 2 minutes to play and the other team had the ball on their own 20, very few teams had a chance to come back.
