So who is the Norris trophy winner this year.

May be a bit early but anyways. I would make a poll but I am just a dumb hockey fan.

I see it as Chara by far as the winner.

Shea Weber has been awesome this year as well but the Norris is about defense.

If anyone says Matt Cooke I swear to god I may lose my mind and neg rep for like a million years.

I think there are three good candidates in:

Karlsson, Pietrangelo (If you haven't watched this kid closely, do it!!) and Weber.

Chara deserves consideration as well but I think those three have had the most impact this year.

Chara is 2nd in points among D-men, has the best +/-, leads the Bruins in PK TOI as well as TOI and often is charged with covering the other teams best player. Karlsson averages like 15 seconds of PK time, lol.

Voters love points when voting on the Norris and considering that Karlsson has a 25 point lead on Chara (who is #2 as you pointed out) the Norris trophy is as good as his.

Sigh... stop listening to Jack Edwards so much.

Chara plays on the best team in the league for GD. No surprise that he leads in +/-.

Karlsson has 3 less even strength points than Chara has total points and has 25 more total points. He plays 25 + minutes a game. His coach chooses those minutes carefully. He has the best offensive defenseman in the league and people expect him waste 5 minutes of his 25 a game on the PK? :L Every single time that a team has a PP to tie the game in the last minute of a game, Karlsson is put on the ice.

At even strength Karlsson plays against other teams' top lines night in and night out. He is a +19 despite his team being only a plus 13 on the season. Chara, conversely is + 33 on a team that is plus 64 on the season.

I am one of the biggest Chara fans out there. I just think that Pietrangelo, Weber and PARTICULARLY Karlsson have had more of a positive impact on their team than Chara has had on his.

Actually in the last 12 years I believe the only leading scorer among defenseman to win the Norris was Lidstrom, who did it twice.

NO one in that span won the D scoring race by more than a dozen or so, but still points mean far less than reputation fr the Norris trophy.

No it's not always the leading scorer, but it's always someone near the top. Obviously over the last decade Lidstrom has gotten a lot of love so he seems to get it if he's anywhere close. But I think a points gap of 25 is too much for voters to ignore and they are gonna be swayed heavily by that. And it's not like Karlsson is a terrible defender either. I don't see any way he doesn't win it.

I'm obviously biased but I think he deserves it too.

No trophy is more dictated by reputation than the Norris. For this reason I think that Karlsson will have to wait. He'll win one in his career. He deserves it this year but I think Weber or Chara will get it based on boneheaded assumptions about players.

Kenny,

How would it be boneheaded. I can understand you seeing your guy as the winner but I can say the same for our guy. I dont wanna get into a ton of debate about who does what for his team but when everyone in the NHL says that the D-Man they hate to play against they say Chara.

By boneheaded, I'm not referring to Chara being a good candidate.

Boneheaded is reading things like Karlsson is bad defensively. He's not the best but he's well above average. People see a small Swedish defenseman and assume he's a PP specialist.

For example, Erik Karlsson has 13 more takeaways than any other defenseman (Shea Weber). He plays against the Malkins and Ovechkins night in and night out yet he is a +19.

I'm not saying he's a runaway for the award. he deserves it but he's not clear cut.

There are voters out there that have watched maybe 5 of his games this year that will not vote for him because they'll say he's poor defensively. Statistics say that's not the case.

Not to mention, I feel Chara's +/- might be a bit skewed. He's 1 of 6 Bruins in the top 10 in +/- so I think the Bruins overall team game weighs heavily on that one for him.
