Interesting... I hate to be "jump the gun" guy but now it's looking like Pietrangelo might not have the skating ability to translate into the NHL career that was expected of him, and Bogosian might have already hit his peak.

Look, I'm not here to make a case for Green for this, even though I'm a Caps' fan, but above is absolutely NOT what this award is for. A la the NHL, the Norris Trophy is awarded to a "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." All around!

Best defensemen means a combination of offensive and defensive skills. And being able to help with the transition game from defense to offense helps a team keep the puck out of their own zone. Green is clearly the worst of the 3 on the defensive end, but he does lead in goals, assists, points, and has the best +/- as a D-man besides his defensive partner Jeff Schultz.

If I were a writer, I'd vote for Doughty, but Green has a solid resume this year and has played much better defensively this year than the playoffs indicate thus far for those of you getting your first glimpse at him.

it should go to best all around defenseman. although like i said a defenseman's primary job is to play defense. look at the 3 on the list. doughty, keith, and green. i will rate each on defense and offense.

doughty is very good on defense and good on offense.
keith is very good at both.
green is very good on offense and pretty average on defense.

one of these things does not fit. and plus minus is more of a team stat. when your team lead the league in goal differential by a large margin then i hope your best defenseman leads the league in plus minus.

i am not saying green is not good or should not be nominated. i am just saying i would have taken pronger or weber.

I hate to "pile on", but in the waning minutes of a playoff game trying to protect the lead, the Caps had Jurnica and Carlson out on the ice, did they not? I'm not saying... I'm just saying...

edit: Don't get me wrong, Green is an INCREDIBLE talent...

I thought Pietrangelo would turn into a great player. I haven't heard anything since he was drafted. When the Kings fans were worried of dropping to the third pick, (we have that type of luck) I was hoping for him.

Now Drew will not be 21 until Dec (I looked it up) which means in Vegas for the award party and for the Kings Avs game in Oct, he can't go drinking.

I'm gonna cast my vote for Keith but to be fair he is the only one of the three I get to watch on a consistent basis. The way that he and seabrook work together on the ice is magnificent, best defensive pairing in the league in my opinion.

I always think of the Norris as 'best offensive defenseman' award. There have been notable exceptions, but stellar points are always found in a Norris winner.

That being said, I still think Keith should win, with Green coming in a close second (2 years in a row over 1 ppg merits some consideration), and Doughty relatively close 3rd, certainly not the last time he will be a finalist.

Jurcina hasn't played in the playoffs. The Caps typically rotate Jeff Schultz, Mike Green, Tom Poti and Jeff Carlson in late game situations. They have only had one game this playoffs where they were protecting a lead late and both lines were out there in the last two minutes.

And for what it is worth, Doughty and Keith are both -5 for the playoffs while Green is +1. Green has been on the ice for 6 even strength goals against, Keith 7 and Doughty 8.

In order to know what these stats mean, you have to knowt he capacities in which each defenseman plays. Keith is his team's shut-down defenseman. Green is not. Keith is drawing tougher defensive matchups than is Green, and that's a large contributing factor to the numbers you posted.

That's just flat out false. Green and Schultz are the Caps #1 defensive pairing. Green isn't on the #1 penalty killing unit because he spends so much time on the ice in the power play and even strength. He is on the 2nd pairing. But make no mistake when the other team's top line is out there Green and Schultz are as well more often than not. Or maybe you can explain to me why he is out there when Cammalleri and Plekanec are on the ice?

I will say on Green's behalf that he makes a mean Geico commercial.

You're right, my mistake... I believe it was Jeff Schultz.

I did not know they rotated defensemen in lead protecting situations, thanks for the info.
