You sound like a Yankees fan....The team everyone used to hate on for throwing money at free agents

the m's average payroll for the past 15 years: $88 million
yank$ average payroll for the past 15 years: $183 million

we get to celebrate our front office purchasing a top-tier FA 2-3 times per decade. you get it multiple times every fucking year.

your comparison is moronic.

Well look how Ortiz aged...

He was excellent from ages 27-31 (.302 AVG, 156 OPS+)
He declined significantly from ages 32-34 (.257 AVG, 120 OPS+)
He found the fountain of youth at age 35+ (.298 AVG, 156 OPS+)

It's moreso that Ortiz is an anomaly than anything else..he was going through the trend that nava mentioned (where everyone was coming to terms that the end was near for him), but then somehow found a way to have a second prime starting at age 35

Ummm...am I the only person with a theory as to how Ortiz found the 'fountain of youth'? Perhaps we should call it the 'syringe of youth'...

'somehow found a way'... :pound:

many good or great hitters have a long prime, then drop off for a few years, have 1 more "magical" season....then crash and retire.

George Brett- 3 highest HR total of his 21 yr career at 35 yr old, then down hill.
Ken Griffey - 35 hr at 35 yr old, then down hill

It's a pretty solid pattern throughout baseball history for the players that play a long time, got to prove they can do it one more time, then give out.
