I'm pulling for this team and won't count them out until the end...but looking ahead....what are the chances this team can turn it around and catch the 'snakes?

I'm not ready for this yet...:yield:

We will know more after this weekend. The Giants have to be within 2 games after this weekend series with the DCracks is over. If the Giants sweep the Cubs and the DCracks lose at least one of the games against Colorado, that puts them 3 games back. If they take 2 of 3 from the DCracks, that puts them 2 games back.

Arizona plays almost all of the same teams that SF does down the stretch. We play the Cubbies for 3 starting today and the DCracks play the Pirates for 3 in a few weeks. Other than that, it's division baseball the rest of the way, so the Giants cannot rely on other teams to do the job for them.

Bottom line is that SF HAS TO go on a tear starting today. They cannot afford to fall any further back.

This. If the Giants want to even think about winning, they need to make a statement this week. If they fall on their face...

It's a good question. Here's how I'd answer. This team's foundation is it's ridiculously strong Starting Pitching and Bullpen. The hitting was suspect last year with a stronger lineup and a couple of veterans having good to great years.

For me, as frustrating as this last 2 months (or so) has been, it can't touch any of the lows felt from 2005 - 2009. These guys are battling, they've given us hope when we took two bullets to the heart in losing Posey and Sanchez. For a lot of other teams, that's not as big of burden, but for an offensively challenged team WITH those two, it's a tall task to remove the #2 and #4 slot hitters. Stop and think really of what we've lost this season.....a 2nd basemen who plays GG caliber defense, gives professional at bats and hits .300 and a catcher who hits for decent power, around .300, gives professional at bats and plays GG caliber defense. Those are huge holes to fill, Kepp has filled the offensive void, but he's not half of what Freddy is defensively. Stewart has the arm of Buster to keep the running game at bay, but he's still nowhere close to the defense that Buster gives (in my humble opinion) and his bat is less than dormant.

So my take on this is, I'm going ot hope for the best for the remainder of this season. If the Giants do make it in, then it will be a bonus. For the first time since I can remember, the Giants are brimming with young talent at the ML level and have a solid CHAMPIONSHIP level nucleus (Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Wilson, Romo, Sandoval, Posey). If Belt and Brown can just become league average or a little above, that would be huge. Sometimes you can win the battle, but not the war. Maybe stressing out our young pitching studs (Lince/Cain/Bum) in the playoffs for an inept lineup wouldn't be an ideal situation given they just did it last year. If they come back rested and hungry next year with a better lineup, then I don't want to be anybody in the NL West.

That said, I'm not giving up on this team this year. They showed too much fight last year for me to do that. Here's hoping we can turn this thing around before it's too late. Remember, it's not like the DBacks are the Yankees. Are we odds on favorites to win the West right now? No. Are things looking good right now? No. Doesn't mean anything until the Giants are mathematically eliminated. I NEVER thought last year would happen with the Padres doing what they were doing either.

Can't say I disagree with any of this post, I'm just getting my heart ready for the likely outcome. Your post outlines the miracle I'm still secretly hoping for...

The reality is that there's 6 head to head games against Arizona and a month of baseball left to secure the win, or at the very least, go down swinging. All these games are going to feel like a playoff game now, can Arizona take that heat?
